Hallo i have this bios for my card.
If i modded it to 100%= 180000
and max 200000 i see that it throtlles at 170 maximum watt.

So the mod dont works this card has 170 watt maximum hardcodded?
It is possible to bypass it?

Yes but I'd simply use Afterburner for it and increase the Power Limit as far as possible.

Replace the cooler on the card and good thermal compound and pads.

I'm glad you got a bios dump instead of trying a off brand bios.

Max temps are 75 celsiou.
I already have repaced vrm pads and the cooler has artcic mx 2.
This has nothing to do with temps.
This has to be maximum hard coded at 170

With afterburner what to achive?
I want to bypass the maximum 170 and go with 180 10 watts more
Tha phases
of the card is rated for 250 watt 10 more is no risk.

is it JUST those entries that effect TDP?

That's the power limit. The TDP is at the top. If you're looking to avoid hitting the power limit perf cap, you'll need to adjust not only the power limit, but the 6 pin / 8 pin / pcie power.

Safer, would be to have someone that knows what they're doing, do it for you.

Sorry i am back to this thread.
Vellinious is right. I tried this.
I only changed psu rail 1 and psu rail 2. from both 75 watts i raised them to 80. Now it can reach 180 watt power limits.

But i cannot understand why a gigabyte 970 or msi 970 need only power limted bios editing and other like pny or gainword or the first evgas has to both edit power limit and pcie rails to work.

I found that that all the 970 that have 2 pcie 6 pin can if i edit them to use somthing like 190watt cant do more.
All the gtx 970 that have 6pin and 8pin can have can do 250 watt easily.

Now something more :
A gtx 970 palit jetstream.
This card has from factory 1152 clock 180 watt power limit and 200 watt maximum.
when is at stock (180 power limit) it uses 75 watt frompsu rails. and it start throttles at 92%.
When with msi afterburner use the 200 watt is it takes from psu rails 79.5 watts and again throttles at 90%.

The same pcb used from gainward and pny all these cards have 180 power limit but they cant use it.
Because they start power throttle at 173 power wattage. That they have so poor overclocking scalability.

Also i found that when i run furmark my clock goes at 1121 and i am tdp limited is this normal at 180 watt?
How can other in videos run furmark and and theirs card dont even loose turbo boost with power limit hit only 20%. They have cards that can do 400 watts? What vrm they have on them?
Anyone has here an oced 970 that in furmark dont throtle with power limit?

Upload your bios, I'll mod it for you and PM it back.

I'd like do it in several steps to make changes easier to track, although most 970's work very similar on a bios level.

-- Some info to help clear things up for future readers --

The watts you set in bios are not TELLING the card to draw that much, nor will the card draw endlessly until it reaches the value! In many cases values over 500 must be used to prevent throttling, but a 970 cannot physically draw anywhere NEAR that much obviously.

With the 900 series you can disable all power limits and throttling in the bios. so it will hold clocks steady until 100c. Obviously your ability to hold those clocks goes down the higher the temperature. For example, <76c 1520MHz is stable, 77-82c 1507MHz is stable, 83-86c 1493MHz is stable and so on. (Silicon lottery will put you between 1480-1533MHz). Official safe temperature is 95c, although you won't risk killing or damaging it unless you're pumping upwards of 1.4v into it while running somewhere over 105c for "a length of time".

It will TDR far before that. Even a bad thermal paste application where it shoots to 103c instantly will just TDR due to instability.
It's probably safer to run with throttling disabled haha.

As long as you've gotten rid of the stock thermal paste or "thermal cement" as I like to call it, you'll have no issue keeping below 82c even with bad case airflow. Normal load usage (not Furmark/OCCT) will probably have you mid-low 70's at most.

The fan RPMs are locked as well. Some may only spin up another 200RPMs. They're usually designed for 3200-3800rpm and limited for noise performance in reviews. However in one case I unlocked fans on a 970 and they just kept going, reaching an ear shattering 5200rpm! :twitch: (It sounded like a vacuum cleaner haha!)

Anyway, this post is too long.

Can anyone tell me what is the last 2 watages?
All the random cards have them 17500 watt for both.
Only gigabyte and asus have one of them 20000 or 24000 watt.
ANd something intersting. Asus strix 970 s08 have both them 17500, in a vbios update they change the fist number in 24000, anyone have a clue how they used?

anywhay my bios is this: -https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/177734/177734

I've unlimited power. The max in MSI Afterburner will appear as 100% now. It will "boost" the max stock boost clock for that card by default and stay there under load no matter what.

Those values are engineering rails or something like that. They're of little importance. Although there have been some cases where stock values were too low from factory causing some cards to be not 100% stable at idle. (Or something along those lines. It's been a while).

(NOTE: THIS BIOS IS FOR OP ONLY. SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT FLASHING IT IF YOU AREN'T OP!!! YOUR COMPUTER WILL BLOW UP AND YOU WILL GET AIDS).
Too harsh? :p

PS: Sorry for the late reply.

first of all thanks.
I have some questions.
U disabled boost clock fine untill here.
How did u find these numbers in power table there exist a calculator?
defaults values with yours have no patern.
Why u raise the tdp from 250 to 390 why u raise the pcie from 66 watt to 108 watts?
I have a very good motherboard but i am sure that it cant put from pcie 108 watts.
Basically u raise also all psu rail watts at 108.
Gtx 970 can only put the wattage symmetrically. That means if i run furmark it gunna pull out from all 108 watts and also from motherboard.
That it is not safe.
Or i miss something.

The way I am aware that it's done, is you load your bios after copying it several times and saving it unmodified, then you use the maxwell bios editor, and mimic higher timings from other bios'. if you had a standard 970, and you were to copy the memory timings from a super clocked version, or some AIB modified card.

I answer this question for you in the first sentence I wrote giving info.

The watts you set in bios are not TELLING the card to draw that much, nor will the card draw endlessly until it reaches the value! In many cases values over 500 must be used to prevent throttling, but a 970 cannot physically draw anywhere NEAR that much obviously."
So just to be crystal clear, it cannot, and will not draw anywhere near this much! This is what must be set to prevent it from power throttling. It will only draw as much as it needs.

Before I go any further I'd like to apologize - I got busy and forgot about this thread. I had planned on being available to respond to your questions. Sorry about that.

Anyway, the power limit numbers I used were based on values from a few different 970 bios mods I've done. 970's are some of the easier cards to bios mod. There are no engineering bugs either (like the 980 Ti has) or memory issues (AFAIK). There is no pattern or calculator. In fact, I could set most values to 1000w and it would not function any differently, other than saying you are using 10% power or something very low. The numbers are calibrated so ACTUAL power use makes sense when monitoring.

By the way, the 75w limit on the PCI-E connector is a "virtual" limit. It can easily deliver over 150w without an issue. Same thing for 6 pin and 8 pin, 6 pin is actually the same as 8 pin. The 75w and 150w limits on that are also virtual. The 6 pin connector can simply be hooked to an adapter and made into an 8 pin with no consequence.

You may have heard of the issues with the reference RX 480, supposedly "overdrawing" from the PCI-E socket - this was an engineering mistake - the card did not draw enough from the 6 pin and drew too much from the PCI-E socket instead which was too much for many old low quality motherboards. It's not something that is possible to do with a card that does not have this flaw AFAIK. (Anyone can feel free to correct me on this).

Let me know how the bios works for you. Once you find your max core overclock move on to memory. Verify them one at a time using OCCT error checking for 30 minutes. (It's MUCH faster to verify on GPU than CPU).

After you know your max overclock, I show you how to "bake in" the clocks so your GPU clocks will always function the same regaurdless of what PC it is in or what driver is in use.

lets talk about palit gtx 970 with 3 mini display ports.
This card if u put 75watt at pcie the max wattage is 187 watt u cant have more whatever u put in psu rails.

So i have concluded that first revisions of gtx 970 have power delivery problems.
And i also found a patern. every 4 watt at pci express u need to add 2 watts in psu rail to work.
Now lets explain this: default: pcie: 66 watt rail 1: 75 watt rail 2 : 75 watt --> max watt: 170
pcie: 75 watt rail1 : 79.5 watt rail2: 79.5 watt --> max watt:187
pcie: 81 watt rail : 82.5 watt rail2: 82.5 watt --> max watt: 199

Thats the reason back then when roach had a gtx 970 limited by tdp because he edited wrong. He raised only the pcie.
The newer cards like msi gtx 970 with 8pin psu and 6 psu have no problem . u Dont need to raise the pcie.
And conclusion :
In palit when u use after burner the max power limit is 200 watt. But it throttles at 93-94% becauase it uses 187 watts.

You're still missing the most basic point, it does not matter what you put for wattage values. It will not be able to actually draw that much.
You don't need to worry about configuring any of that anyway, there is zero benefit of doing so. The whole point is to disable throttling, not reconfigure it. So if you want to disable throttling and run at a stable clock under load like the thousands of others who have modded 900 series cards, this is how you do it.

If I lower any of the values that were raised back to stock, IT WILL THROTTLE. Some values might appear like they shouldn't have an effect, but they do. Including that PCI-E rail. - Why? I don't know. But after you test values on dozens cards, flashing them dozens of times each and testing each change you understand exactly what works and what doesn't. I've done bios mods for dozens of cards ranging from 680's to 980 Ti's, plus a couple on the AMD side. I promise it won't blow up! Give it a try. :)
