Hey guys, I've looked at a couple reviews and they show either winning. Which is the better cooler for my AMD Athlon II X4 640. Also, on the OCZ website it says the vendetta is only for AM2, but then i read that the AM3 and AM2 mounting is the same. Will I have any trouble installing this? Also, will i have to get any additional brackets to do so?

Also, which is quieter?

AM2 and AM3 mounting is the exact same, the Vendetta will mount. The 212+ also comes with AM2/AM2+/AM3 mounting hardware.

My vote goes to the Hyper 212+ because you get more physical hardware and a bit more cooling performance for not much more additional money.

does it come with brackets? It seems like a lot of ppl are unable to mount this becasue of the no brackets and push pins

212+ is legendary in price/performance ratio. i have seen nothing but good reviews on it and I am planning to get one eventually for my AMD rig to replace the Hyper 101a.

I am 100% partial to the CM Hyper 212+. I've used it for over a year now and love it. The 2000rpm fan is super quite with the PWM control and even when I ran it at full blast it was just as loud as any other 2000rpm fan.

$25 for the performance it yields is amazing.

With the mounting bracket you should be able to get the 212 facing front/back or up/down; the OCZ should only mount up/down due to its clip mounting system.

^^ This

The Hyper 212 is cheap, but unlike most cheap heatsinks it has a very decent mount rather than the usual clip for AMD and push pins for Intel. Using the AMD stock bracket with a clip is usually ok for all but the largest heatsinks but it does limit the direction you can mount the heatsink and can be dangerous with high tension (screwdriver flying into board or simply too much tension). Mounts with screws and spring tensioners are much easier to use and provide an even distribution of exact tension.

Having said that, I did throw out the stock fan on my 212+ right away. Noisy is a subjective term but the whole point of PWM fans is to be quiet at idle and only spin up under load. I thought the 212 fan was noisy at idle in PWM mode even when manually spun down to under 1000 RPM. It's not a very good fan but in all fairness you can't expect to get a good fan at this price point. Fortunately it does include brackets for push / pull with better fans.
