This has been a big issue with my main laptop (2021 HP ENVY 13) since I got it; I close it and put it in a bag, and it's really warm and has a low battery when I pull it out. I also have problems where its fan will stay on when I close it, especially when plugged in.

I've looked through the BIOS, and this laptop doesn't have any options for reenabling S3 sleep. Forcefully disabling S0 in Windows will cause the laptop to stay entirely on when closed.

No, I don't want to use hibernate due to the slow wake time and extra wear on my SSD (though this isn't that big of a problem). I want a modern laptop with proper S3 support (maybe Framework?).

Both my Steam Deck and my Clevo W650 (15.6" laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti and a Coffee Lake CPU) have full S3 support, and I don't have any problems with the wake times of those. Neither device has any of the issues I mentioned.

LTT finally made a video addressing this problem with modern laptops. Here's hoping something might get done about it at some point (it won't).

I have an older Kaby Lake laptop that only supports S3, no S0 support here..

S3 sleep turns off everything but memory. Also known as "suspend to RAM."

Modern Standby (S0) keeps everything powered on but is supposed to put the CPU into a low-power state. This allows the laptop to do things like download updates and such while "asleep."

I'm not too familiar with how Modern Standby works, I just know that Coffee Lake desktop and Kaby Lake-R laptop advertised support for it.

My XPS 13 9370 (funnily enough, similar just older generation of the one in the LTT video) is rarely used nowadays so it's just powered off. I had one notable oh-shit moment with my Kaby-R laptop (8550U) when I returned to it in the morning after it being in sleep overnight, only to find the entire laptop unresponsive and blazing hot (might have burned a finger or two and had to run it under some cold water). Ended up powering it off somehow and leaving to cool for the day, and taking it apart to check nothing was amiss under the hood, after which it worked just fine and never did it again.

I don't use laptops much anymore, grudgingly I feel similar to Linus about Windows. My previous 12" 5Y31 Macbook never gave me major problems. Except, because I'm not much a fan or user of laptops anymore, I'd be looking at an iPad Air/Pro instead of a Macbook.
