I bought Portal 2 without ever having played P1, so the day P2 showed up I fired up P1. And to be honest, I'm not a huge L4D fan, don't like TF2, and HL2 makes me sick, so my track record with Valve games isn't the best. But I really enjoyed P1, it's an extremely short game, I beat it and the bonus levels in a day, but I think I got it for $5 and it was completely worth that. I'll probably keep going back and working on the challenges every now and then. I'm not sure I would quite spend $10 on it though.

Like said, P1 will get your brain thinking, but to be honest, P1 isn't filled with a ton of story, it's all pretty basic, entertaining, but basic. You could jump right into 2 without a huge issue, but 1 is a good game, still looks good, I would recommend it.

Yeah, there really isn't much story to P1 when you think about it, but there are so many references to P1 in P2.

the game itself was the story.

you were dumped into a test lab with no warning, no idea why, what lay at the end of the tests (CAKE!) or what the point of the experiments even were, let alone what new trick they'd require of you in the next test. while it had no 'plot' it had motivation for the player... and IMO, thats more important in a game. games are not movies, and tying them to the same conventions of plot and action is why so many fail

Exactly, the beauty of Portal was that it didn't have to lay the story out for you. I was personally motivated to finish the game just to try and find out WTF was going on. Plus the humour was right on my level :D

Definitely get and play the first Portal if you haven't done so, and before getting Portal 2. The game's excellent. And play it till the end ;) if you quit before level 18 and what follows you'd have missed half the game even though that seems to be the end! :D

Just buy the Valve complete pack. Trust me it's money well spent.

I don't agree. I think it would be a shame for someone to play Portal 2 without experiencing Portal 1.

I couldn't agree more.

just beat portal 2 and loved it, although I liked the ending song on portal 1 better than 2, but the sentries at the end were pretty funny.

They were both shining examples of what games should be . . . . . fun, most devs today should try to learn from this.

i think it was this thread where i said game devs are trying to copy movies/hollywood. its all about the plot, the storyline... and not about the FUN.

notice a trend with all the indie games that seem to be all the rage? they go for simple fun over everything else and the public is taking notice. (angry birds, i'ma lookin at you)

Rule: Everyone must play Portal.
Tangent Rule: Therefore, everyone must play Portal 2.

But seriously, Portal one was amazing and if the developers even got it half right, the new one will be great too. You don't necessarily have to play the first one, but why would you not want to?! :)

______________

If you never played Portal, that by itself is a great game.
If it's your type of game.

Portal is relatively cheap to purchase now. It's a good way of testing whether you like the game before you spend the big $$ on Portal 2. i.e. if you hated Portal, then don't buy Portal 2. And obviously if you liked it then you will want to get Portal 2.

Getting Portal 2 by itself will backfire -- If you don't like it, you'd have wasted a good sum of money on a game you don't like. And if you like it you'd have spoiled your chances of enjoying the first Portal because the graphics aren't as good and the game is much shorter and simpler.

I played the original Portal before trying Portal 2, and I'm not sorry for having done so :toast:

Just had to elaborate since I just got both of them, wondering the same thing. Man getting portal 1 was so worth it. It's a very pretty game and it's just so unique, there is nothing like it and it scratches and itch that I never knew I had.
Portal 1 is very pretty and very worth getting. Much prettier and much more fun than I anticipated.
