Okay, so I hate the way that this DFI x38 overclocks 45nm CPU's. There is so much shit you have to do and so much time to tweak every option in this damn boards BIOS that it gives me a headache and I dont want to put up with it anymore. Ive posted over at DFI-Club and this guy as the x48 based board and he has been tweaking GTL's till it comes out of his ass and he still doesnt have a stable overclock and he is going on two and a half weeks now.

Now im looking back over towards the SLi area. Ive been wanting to go SLi with my 8800GT for shits and giggles.

My question is how well do the 780i's overclock quad core's compared to that of the 750I? Whats the performance gap? I know I can get 3.6Ghz out of this chip, but because I lack the time and expertise to fiddle with the damn memory and GTL crap in the BIOS, it wont stay stable.

Im not giong to end up spending 18months trying to figure out how to get a stable OC on this board. It's just not worth it. I never had to mess with that shit with my Q6600, but now I do with this chip. Its weird.

Suggestions?

TIA.

My 780i board had a number of unrecognizable barely documented features as well. I'm not sure how much better off you will be.

First of all DFI X38 is not shit. It is made for extreme overclocking. More then 1000 options are in the bios. For the SLI board just get 780i but if ur going ddr3 go with 790i (but theres no reason for that to have ddr3 with a Q6600).

Note DDR3 is still a heavy waste of money... You gain next to nill and the cost is still outrageous!

Not sure of other brands, but I myself have had endless problems with an ASUS Striker II
780i board, could not OC a Q6600 G0 at all and eventually stopped working. I managed to get a refund and am purchasing a 790i board, from the reports I have read, the new chipset overclocks quads pretty well, on par with the intel chipsets.

I never said the x38 was "shit." I said that there was so much shit in the BIOS that I had to tweak just to get an overclock stable its pathetic. Which goes back to your statement about the "1000 options in the bios." :)

Cant really overclock to the extreme if I cant get the CPU there. ;)

Im not spending a crap load of money on DDR3. Not worth it at the current price/performance.

I dont have a Q6600 anymore.

Note DDR3 is still a heavy waste of money... You gain next to nill and the cost is still outrageous!
Agreed. See statement above. :toast:

Seems like board choices are pretty slim.

I heard the same about 790i, but I just dont have the dough to spend on 4GB of DDR3.

Any recommendations?

I have heard the most cost effective solution to the newer nVidia chipsets is the 750i. Overclocks just as good (if not better) but a little bit cheaper. Granted you will notice they run 8x+8x 2.0 SLi.

The ASUS striker II is supposed to be pretty terrible. The MSN P7N Diamond is supposedly the best of the 780i boards from what I've read. Personally I wouldn't get a 780i board but MSI gave me this one because they screwed me over so bad during the RMA process. The 780i chipset seems to be rather hobbled together since it's basically a 680i chipset with an overclocked PCI-E bus to provide PCI-E 2.0 and a third chip to add the extra slots. Seems rather shaky to me. Unfortunately if you want SLI and don't want to shell out for 790i it's still your best bet. Althougth the 750i boards are supposed to be good as well.

I think the new EVGA 750i FTW motherboard is 16x+16x 2.0

wait for intel's p45 chipset motherboards to come out. dfi's are known for their complex and powerful bioses. very very powerful... if you can figure out how to work them :p i know sneekypeet is a master with dfi bioses and im sure he can help you out with the settings and all.

dude you'll be lucky to get 3.6 on that chip stable because it's well documented that the q9450 and most of the newer 45nm quads do not oc very well.

I wasnt really thinking about the FTW board. I was more thinking of the P7N platinum. I heard it does 16x+8x+8x or soemthing. I dunno ...

Until Intel chipsaets can support SLI functionality its very choice limited. Some 780i brands (I'm not sure) seem to gain reasonable quad OC's such as Evga, XFX ect. Don't go the Stiker II Formula for christ sakes!!!!

Im doing prime right now for 3.2GHz for someone that has same mobo and Q9450 but it can get 3.6GHz and 3.8 for benching

and I redid the vdroop today and now it has less drop and it gets more vcore on load then it droping more :rockout:

so right now its at 1.192v bios 1.2v idel 1.184v

also got the new bios for this mobo 1230 damn asus didnt know what I was talking about but ppl on there fourm where saying they got it

but im happy with mine sorry your not thats one thing stoping me at getting a new mobo to much crap in it

oh missed the SLi part :p well its fun for benching but a faster single card is better IMO

If I can get 3.6, it would be nice. I was able to bench at 3.6Ghz and have my card overclocked and got abour 14800 in 06. Thats 2x what I got in 06 with my Q66 with a LOT less heat at faster speeds.

I can no longer go by the settings you or anyone else has unless its a DFI x38/x48 board because of the memory settings and GTL voltages I have to mess with. Its a major pain in the ass. Its surprising because I didnt have to mess with those settings with my Q6600 but I do with my X3350. I cant figure out why that is. Usually, I can just up the FSB along with some voltages and mess with the ram speeds and im off to bench/run prime. That isnt the case now.

Check this guys OC log on my thread on DFI-Club. Its insane. He's been going at this two weeks and still empty handed.

well its just NB and the FSB Termination Voltage I need to make sure I got enough volts and it can be stable

I know there not the same but if you can find out those I need to get more Im sure you could get more or unless the newer chipsets can get the lower multi Q that high which would suck as the cost more

Review on Newegg for the EVGA 780i:

Pros: Wow! This mobo is perfect! I love everything about it. The LEDs for the boot status code came in very handy. Told me that my memory was DOA. I love all the SATA slots, 2 Nvidia ethernets, not much legacy junk. Easy to connect to my case.

Cons: Expensive! The metal shield that goes on the back panel doesn't label the jacks. That's frustrating. Which of the six audio jacks is which? Which NIC is which? Is purple keyboard or mouse?

Other Thoughts: I hate the documentation of the BIOS - both what's in the manual and what's in the BIOS setting display. Some have lots of detail, but others seem to have been auto-generated. For example: WOL(PME#) From Soft-Off This function on the Power Management Setup menu allows you to enable or disable WOL(PMW#) from soft-off. Gosh, that was sure informative. Good thing they bothered to write that explanation. Now, what does WOL(PMW#) mean, again?

Tech Level: high
Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg.com

 Yeah okay...tech level of "high" but he doesnt know what color the keyboard and mouse jacks are supposed to be.

Has anyone dealt with an XFX motherboard before? Or know of anyone who has?

I just got comparing these two motherboards, and it seems even though they are the same motherboard, the XFX has a lot less issues than the EVGA.

What are your thoughts on this guys?

Dumb question but if I use an XFX motherboard with my XFX video card, will there be better performance than say an EVGA board with an XFX video card? Just seems like XFX would optimize it for their own video cards. I could be wrong though.

I love my new evga 780i board. The bios is more complicated verses intel boards, but thats what google is for.;) I've had my g0 at 3.7. I got 21000 in 3dmark06 at that setting.:p

@ntdouglas

Do you have to mess with any GTL's or difficult memory optimization other than setting the DRAM volts and strap/divder?
