Power consumption : Details?

Okay so the two CPUs I'm comparing is the FX-6300 and the i7-4790k. I know of the wattage difference but I want to know exactly how much more different the consumption from the wall is. Say if a rig with the FX pulls $50 a year, how much would the i7 pull? (Saying these are the only components that are different in the setups.)

While I had an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 for the FX and I'll be getting a Gigabyte GA-Z97X for the i7, and everything else is listed in my specs (Don't look at the laptop, that laptop is pure evil) will be the same.

I'm just trying to cut down on the electricity bill as my laptop ran $30 in a month and I don't want my desktop to do the same.

no question about it the i7 should be 10 cheaper a month to run then the AMD and its more then twice as fast

I don't know what you're paying for electricity but your laptop running at full load 24/7 would only cost about $7 a month at 10 cents per kwh. Isn't this the laptop that you said the power brick melted?

The difference in power consumption will be no where near 10 dollars a month. I would say that for power consumption, either one would be about equal and once you start overclocking, power consumption becomes no longer relevant. Just get which ever one you want and be happy.

On a different note, I have a FX8350 OC'ed at 4.4Ghz with an R9 290x and still, my power bill only gets to about $45 total on average.

Thing is that for the moment I'm not overclocking, and my GPU is the one listed in my specs, the 660.

Haswell will run at around 40w less (FX-6xxx@180w, i7@140w) when both are heavily overclocked. So, with a worst case scenario, let's add ~15w for both VRM and PSU inefficiencies, which would mean 55w difference. Let's say you use it 10h a day, which would mean 550wh/d x30 would be 16.5kwh/month. At 9c per kwh that's just under $1.50 a month savings (18 bucks a year woot).

That's a worst case scenario, 10 hours a day of basically furmark... Realistically your CPU will not be drawing its max TDP for all of the day, and will likely not even be on for a huge part of the time. A haswell system will draw under 100w TOTAL, and the FX system will probably not be that much more. Then again, the C7 sleep states might actually push the difference between the two past 40w, but I would not count on it.

My mum was complaining last year that the electricity bills went up by $10 a month (we pay around 10 cent/kwh), she blamed it on me using my computer a lot more... Then I showed her the numbers and found that the majority of it was to blame on the fact that the pump for the swimming pool had been left on day and night... It's a 200w unit running 24/7 rather than my laptop which is limited to 120w, and doesn't run furmark and p95 all the time.

If you are using it to leverage financial aid in getting your new CPU, go ahead, but just say that the 'old' CPU is very inefficient, it draws over 50% more power (which would be based on TDP...)

I guess the last factors to add in is the Hp 2009f monitor and 30" Sceptre tv. Monitor used daily but tv used rarely. Both items left plugged in 24/7

Yeah, but I don't think they are on 24/7... My 7 year old display draws like 3 watts when it's off... I doubt your TV would be much more. And either way, they have a max draw of something like 30w...

Raidmax 520w, and I was just trying to figure out how much less the i7 will use because I have the FX, but the RMA has been delayed to life happening, and I already have the Intel board ready for the i7. Plan is that I get the RMA board+FX to a friend in exchange that they buy me a CPU cooler. A trade in a sense.
Their motherboard was fried due to tampering from a very jealous duncebucket.

It depends on how much load the machine has on it. Any machine at idle with reasonable power save settings won't make a huge difference. I think 10 dollars a month is a realistic difference if the CPU is loaded 100% of the time, not under normal conditions though. An idle machine uses less and a sleeping machine uses practically none.

I do tend to uh.. Max out my CPU usages a bit.. I went from an Athlon II X4 620 @2.9ghz to the FX-6300. Still 100% loaded it. I'm sure with the i7 maxing it will be easy for me to do, though I don't do it just to be like "OMG HAHA LOOK WHAT I CAN DO" because it's more "how many game clients will it take to max either the memory or CPU first?"

Do you sleep? My point is that more often than not unless your stressing or crunching, you won't be fully loaded 24/7. I'm not talking about hitting 100% when you do stress it, I'm talking about stressing it 100% all the time. More often than not, games won't stress your machine as hard as stress tests or benchmarks will and once again, that's not occurring all the time without fail.

I rarely put my computers to sleep though I do let the displays sleep after a minute of inactivity. When I'm away I usually leave a game up or teamviewer for access to it.

Lots of games stay on even if you put the computer to sleep. Or hibernation. I always get them mixed up, but I just touch the mouse and can be ingame in seconds.

The biggest savings can be made by changing ones habits. This is true for almost everything.

I used to have WCG going at night on my desktop when I had the FX in it because no one cared about how much the bill was besides in the summer time. Now it's just a game (modded to take less CPU usage and 0 GPU usage) and Skype at night.
