I have an Antec HCP 1200 and I plan to buy and overclock 2 r9 290Xs but I'm worried that I need a bigger PSU because the combined power draw of my 3960X at 4.8Ghz and the r9 290Xs once I overclock them because according to w1zz's reviews the r9 290X pulls around 500W at 1.25V so I'm worried that my 250-400W(There is no way to measure this properly but my calculations point to 320W) CPU and a pair of these will blow my PSU up. So I want to know if I should buy a bigger PSU or if I'll be fine.

You'll be just fine. Apart from the HCP-1200 being proven to be capable of delivering 1500W for prolonged periods of time, you actually won't reach even 1000W of power draw unless heavy benching, and if you're benching all day long every day, you don't deserve a working PC. :p

Well I would have said maybe a little bigger psu..maybe a 550w would be a good aim? I might be wrong but that's what I understand, PSU's are also at peak efficiency when 80-90% load.

That's what I would do anyway ;)

Buy yourself a watt meter and measure the wattage that your system draws with the GPU idle and the CPU at full load. That will give you an idea of the headroom that you have. Remember that the watt meter will record the watts used + the PSU losses. Make sure the watt meter has the capacity that you need.
