IIRC, both the Corsair 850 and Tt 850 are built by the same OEM, CWT aka "ChannelWell".

It will probably be fine, though I have measured my rig as pulling upwards of 1200w from the wall; probably because I have more hard drives.

It should be fine like I said I am running a pair of x2's on psu from the same oem/watt. If I'm not mistaken the 4850x2 draws more than the 4870x2.

Well, the graphics cards alone consume 500+w of power at peak load.

Lets put it like this:

  • One HD4870x2 consumes more power than one GTX480.
  • Normally W1z uses an 800w BFG unit.
  • For the GTX480 SLi review, W1z switched to a 1200w power supply.

The HX850 will probably handle it, especially with its great ability to handle loads very well all the way up to its maximum. However, I think with the rest of your rig, it would be pushing it very near the maximum of the PSU.

Also, for those saying the HX850 should perform the same as the TT 850 because they are the same wattage and OEM, that is simply false. Not all Channelwell PSUs are created equal. The Corsair HX850 is totally different from the Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850w, as an example, despite both being Channelwell PSUs. The Corsair is almost in a completely different league, the TT XT has horrible ripple under loads close to the max, while the Corsair doesn't suffer from this issue at all.

Yea but I don't have the toughpower xt I have the tr2 they are completely different psu's

Not to mention by saying the hx850 is better and my 850 handling the load just fine kinda backs up that the hx850 is going to do it just fine

I run my twin 4870x2's on a Corsair HX1000 just to be on the safe side and everything seems to work right.

From what i read the hx850 is on par/or better that the hx1000 due to the way its made or something like that... I was truly wondering because i do have a Epower 450w Juicebox that i could throw in if it could cause issues down the line... I can put the 450w on just one card if need be..

I have same product shown here just Visiontek added their name to this one due to Top Power not selling like hotcakes..lol

The HX1000 still puts out more power however it is an earlier design from a time when they were not really able to make a reliable single-unit 1000w powersupply. That is why the HX1000 is actually two power-supplies in one. You will see that it has two 12v "rails" but those are actually from separate internal power-supplies. If you are able to load balance the rails correctly it will outperform the HX850 but that might not be practical for some configurations. I believe there is also a slight efficiency hit due to the dual design.

Ahh yes that is what i was reading.. It's like 2 500w power supplies... I almost bought it but the reviews i was reading for the HX850 were all good and it looked like it was a better choice than the hx1000.. Sometimes i second guess that choice!!!

Not to mention by saying the hx850 is better and my 850 handling the load just fine kinda backs up that the hx850 is going to do it just fine

Sorry, I guess the way I worded it was a little confusing. I wasn't saying your TR2 was bad PSU, I just using the XT as an example of another 850w Channelwell PSU that wasn't nearly as good as the HX850. I believe the HX850 is one of the best PSUs for the money and the class, but I don't have any direct experience with the TR2, so it might be just as good.

And while it might be enough to handle the load in your system, you only have an SSD and a 320GB drive. He has 3 power hungry Raptors and another WD Black. Plus his i5 is more power hungry than most AMD processors also. Which is why I said it would be pushing the PSU near its max.

??? I thought a single rail was better for stability???

Doesn't matter actually. A good PSU is a good PSU, a shitty PSU is a shitty PSU. The number of rails doesn't really matter, there are good single rail PSUs and good multi rail PSUs, and there are shitty single rail PSUs and shitty multi rail PSUs.

Haha sorry about that the xt was garbage imo. Mines got some ripple but well within atx spec at full 850w load. The only downside I have found is out of the box mine has 2 8pins and 2 6 pins bur connectors are setup for 4x8 pins. I have put 4x74gb raptors on it with a pair of opty quads and it did just fine....

Well I have a XT and it is great. It has handled just about every sli and crossfire rig out and it's rails are stable as hell and I also have multiple
hardrives, Plus dual 5870's etc!!!

A pair of 5870's isn't anywhere near the power draw of a 4870x2 let alone a pair of them. Its not a bad psu persay just not at a full 850w unit.

your about 200 watts under powered....do what you want tho.

AS your PSU will probably handle the load and all it may not last long...

According to the powercalulator with my entire system at 90 percent load which is impossible, really impossible, because every device cannot be at full load(power draw) or even 90 percent at the same time . It would draw 667 watts and there is nothing wrong with my powersupply at all.

The problem with the XT 850w is the 12v ripple when the PSU is loaded over 700w, anything below that and the PSU is really solid.
