Powering off issue

Hello guys, I've ran into a problem I've never encountered in my whole life, so here it is, my pc won't power off. So here's what I've done:

1. thought it might be a psu issue, swapped it, still the same

2. swapped gpu's, same issue.

3. No virus, had a fresh copy of xp, same issue.

4. tried experiencing with ram, minimum hardware in, still the same issue.

5. 24h of prime95, stable.

Obviously, I think it might be down to the mb, since windows logs off fine, just when the signal to shut down goes in, there's some kind of noise (usually thats the noise you hear when it shuts down) but then stays on and the screen goes black. Pc restarts fine. So what do you think? I'm helpless here.

have you tried mobo defaults? to rule out the power options being played with? like S3 and other power states. Also have you played with windows "power button options?"

Yes been there, done that. Bugs me off really. Every time I need to shut down, the pc, I have to force a shut down (pressing the power button).

thats really odd. I have to say im out of ideas. the one last thing I have is that its a communication issue between the Os and mobo. In which case all I can think of is maybe trying to install/update the chipset drivers.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too. Seems its not a driver issue though, cause it was never like this 2-3 days ago. I remarked it first when I had to put it to sleep, and it refused to, only to whirl mad (gpu fan, cpu fan) Maybe it's time has come

Check to see if anything is abnormal in the power options?

whenever i had issues like this, it tended to be motherboard/ram at fault. higher voltages (ram/NB/SB) often fixed it for me (tended to be related to my OC's)

Other than with the shutting down option, nothing, it starts and runs fine.

Its stable, that's for sure, reverted to stock settings, still the same bug. I'm on the same voltages since ages.

Have you set your firewire/lan etc to "allow this computer to turn off this device to save power"

oh and my housemate had random power issues due to a dodgy PS/2 keyboard - make sure you try with NOTHING connected except a mouse (that means remove any extra USB headers from the mobo, front audio connectors, the lot) - and then try with a different mouse

As Mussels said and even see if it will shut down from Safe Mode

A lil update, over the week end I've tried everything, even stripping my rig down (in case there was some kind of contact) to no avail. Pisses me off really, knowing that somethings not right! Think I may have to live with it, maybe the boards just telling its age. Works fine though, but you know how it is! I've resolved thousands of problems with other people's pc's down the years, it sucks that you can't solve yours when you have one!

Ok so now I've got another problem, maybe its linked with the issue I had, my ram in the bios shows its a 5-5-5-15, but when I fire up cpu-z it shows 5-7-7-20. So basically, what the heck is going on with my pc? Anyone got any ideas? Its acting up real weird lately, first the powering off issue (which is still bugging me) then my ram. See my cpu-z validator image V V V. help will be very much appreciated, its being a pain in the *ss.

Resolved : Stupid really, since I had reset the bios, the settings were on auto (absolutely forgot that part), put it back on manual, now its fine. Shutting down issue still there though.
