So when someone in the USA buys something, when and how does (s)he pay the (VAT or whatever it is called) tax?
Seperately? How?
Or when buying from Amazon or Bestbutt etc Do you get a specific tax added (during the transaction) depending on your (fiscal) location? I don't remember anyone (USA'er) here saying, "Wait! On top of the announced price I pay that much more!"

So is it tax heaven or not? If not, where does all the massive money for your Military, NASA come from? Indirect taxes? Income taxes? No State survives without taxes, for sure.

You know the US has some of the largest debts in the world, yes?

I hate finances more than cancer (I am not the typical calvinist, jew, arab or Hanseatic anglosaxon, lol), but I recognize they matter "a lot".... So, what taxes?

Well, most of the things you mentioned come from income taxes....and massive borrowing (It's not a popular opinion, but IMHO, the federal government does not tax us enough. Honestly, just a percentage or two more per person would make a YUGE difference). There will be a day when the U.S. Federal government cannot borrow anymore.

When we purchase items, we pay a sales tax, which varies. Usually one of the 50 states gets a cut (and this varies from state to state), then another amount which also varies is based on what the municipality or county you live in has voted to add. For instance, where I am, Louisiana has 5% Sales Tax added, and then the local area I live in adds another 3.5% in Sales tax, for a total of 8.5% Sales tax.

Wow, RTWJUNKIE thats one of the clearest ever explanations I ever got! ; ) Thanks. I gotta reread it twice but I get the idea :)

Just to get a final concept of the "cosa" or issue, all right?: Your receipt, as I understand, looks like this:

Item price: 100 $
State sales tax: 3.5 $
Muncipality sales tax: 8.5 $
Total = 112 $

When you buy at p.e. Amazon, you pay 112 $ or 100$?

Here in Spain we have a high sales tax for hardware (21%, there are lower taxes for more basic goods, like food, at 8%) but a low or zero income tax for most of the people, many if not most even get money back)...

With Amazon I would pay $108.50 (since it is state sales 5% tax plus municipality 3.5%. It's absurdly low compared to what you are paying. And there is no national sales tax for us. And yet we still have people complain about the "high" sales taxes.

Just one interesting side note about online buying. A number of our states do not enforce sales tax being taken when purchasing online. They have a "voluntary" compliance system, where people are expected to claim all the out of state purchases they made online, and then pay that sales tax at yearly tax time.

This results in states that don't enforce this losing a lot of money, and customers buying items cheap because of no sales tax.

I'd pay more tax for services, as you allude to in your previous post. Cuts to services and defence budgets are not good. Moreover in some countries the tax is used on healthcare. UK and some other countries have a free health service. I've had a few years of scans, MRI, CAT, biopsies, etc and there is no fee, no insurance - it's paid for in UK taxes. The only problem is people are getting more lazy, less health aware and apathetic with their lives so the health cost is hard to meet.

On topic, I feel buying a 1080ti in the UK will mean I am contributing positively to our national health service.

If I am not mistaken the American prices don't include VAT.

They don't have any type of VAT full stop.
I'd be happy if someone from the USA would enlighten me about the amount of tax on top of hardware.

You pay 9-whatever% sales tax (really depends on state), but nothing like VAT. I remember living in europe and never affording anything.

1) Thanks.
2) Lucky beggar.

VAT is at 20% in the UK and it's a killer. I don't know if it'll be lowered when we leave the EU in a couple of years time though.
I highly doubt it.

How old are you? We have a fairly solid education system (albeit getting meddled to pieces by morons) for all and free health care. Them be what taxes is for.

Old. BTW the education system has been wrecked since the late 70's early 80's and still being dumbed down.
The NHS won't last another 5 years the way things are looking. Privatisation is on the horizon.

So with the NHS deficit running so high, please tell me where those high taxes are going?

Running a liberal country that has a social welfare system in place requires taxes. You know that - that's why I asked how old you were as it seems younger folks don't understand the tax system. The major problem we face is an aging population and a massive trend towards sedentary lifestyles despite the boom in 'fashionable' fitness (just a facade really). But, enough about my ranting, here's the breakdown:

NHS and Social Security accounts for almost a third of spending. Besides, 20% tax isn't high for a european country, it's pretty average.

But this is about the 1080ti so FWIW, I was going to get one but now I'm thinking hmmm.....

You're going off topic.
The only thing I'll say to your comments and figures is this.
