i issue an open challenge to all of you to come up with a better combination of motherboard/cpu/ram/gpu that competes on price + performance + value. i think i did a decent job with this pick. this will help me pick out a good combo for my next system. please use newegg for prices/links. im thinking ddr3 may not add to much to the price and add a lot more to the long term value.

motherboard = GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

cpu = Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

ram = CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

gpu = HIS Hightech H290XT1GG4DVN-R Radeon HD 2900XT 1GB 512-bit GDDR4 PCI Express x16 CrossFire Supported Video Card

price = $1,183.97

I've got that motherboard and whilst it's cheap, and it overclocks well, there are a few inherent issues with it...

1. if you've overclocking it will NOT wake from hibernation/standby. aka if your running vista and a friend is using it, and they power down with the power button it's not gonna turn back on again till your clear the cmos, or power up/down repeatedly until the mobo does it for you...

2. the network adapter is quite poor, inbounds over my lan the transfer speeds are just as to be expected. try to access anything on my pc from somewhere else and you'll get about 20Kb/s :( Oh, and sometimes when you boot windows you have to unplug and replug the network cable to get it to connect.

3. i can't burn DVD's or CD's, with nero and stuff i get get "A hardware error occured"

But hey, those are the price you pay for having a cheap p35 chipset, DDR2 and DDR3 support and OC'ing headroom in the armfulls :D

ps. The first two "issues" are quite easy to live with :p

Ooops, breezed past the fact that it's the board that supports both DDR2 and 3.

Well, my ram suggestion still stands. Use the extra money for another hard drive or something. lol

I think the machine in my thread has much better price to performance than these....
