hello,

I recently purchased, (to my delight and my farthers woe) a new Powercolor X850XT AGP, i was very pleased with my purchase, untill i installed it. i found that in bf2, i have to set everything on low to get a decent frame rate, (on medium or high i get about 10-20 fps) even on low i get lagging. i also did the hl2 video stress test and achieved 58.07 average
fps. which my old (over clocked addmitadly) 9600 could do. i have installed various drivers, from the ones that came on the cd, to the one's i downloaded off the site, to ATI standard ones, to the Omega Drivers, yet still it doesn't seem to change anything. have i bought a dud, or was just disillusioned in what i thought this card would do?

my specs are:
  • Powercolor X850XT AGP
  • ASUS P5P800 mother board
  • 1GB RAM
  • 200gb HDD (if thats relivent)
  • Intel Celron D processor.
  • Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platnium Pro
all latest drivers installed.....

All i really want to know is, is this what i should expect?

its you RAM and the Celeron processor. BF2 really needs 2GB of RAM and you may want to upgrade to a full fat P4 or a Pentium D. Celerons just dont cut it for gaming really.

Look, your ram is fine. Celeron processors are made for students and people at work. They have smaller caches then P4's. The rest of your machine is fine. A new processor will give you more gain in BF2 then more ram (even tough its true that 2GB is needed).

Your Celeron is holding the wrathfull power of your X850XT card back so what I suggest you do: Look for second hand P4's (speeds 3.2 to what you can get cheap :p) or for stuff on sale at local computer hardware stores and their sites. Dont spend more then 150$ on it.

Then there is option 2:
If you cannot find a cheap P4 or PD. This is what you do. Get a ASRock 775Dual-VSTA (reviewed here: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2797&p=10) And a E6300 Intel Core 2 Duo. This is one kickass combo for only 230$ (thats why your limit for the P4 or PD is 150$) You can put all your stuff in, Ram, X850XT, harddisks and everything so you will have a Conroe system for only 230$

<sigh> i was afraid of that, unfortunatly, i blew all my money on the video card......damn...

Before the Intel Core 2 Duo will be available everywhere we will be in the end of August beginning of September. Enough time to get some money together. And believe me, the conroe upgrade is worth making. Im doing the exact same thing with my X800XT ;)

Good option huh! 230€ for a Conroe setup! :D
Swap with your dad for the time being, he doesnt need a P4 ;) and while you have his processor you can save up ;)

Here's one crazy idea. Did you install the AGP drivers from your motherboard or just use the default Microsoft drivers? With the Microsoft drivers, I was getting an 8500 in 3dmark03 with an x800GTO. With my motherboard's drivers, it went up to 9800.
