Problem with RAM ddr2 1066 help

I got a new cpu lately and for some reason im having problems when running ram at 1066.

I went into the bios and set the mem multiplier to 5.something. I also raised the memory voltage from 1.8 to 2.1.

Windows runs normal but when I play games like gta 4 it crashes after a while. It seems to work fine at 800 however. Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to work around this issue and fool around with the cpu clock and reference clock leaving the mem clock at default?

It's a shame because this ram is meant for 1066 and I can't even get it to work properly.

Post a screen shot of CPU-Z with cpu and memory tab and ill take a look.

you'll likely need to manually set the timings for the ram, not just the MHz and voltage. use CPU-Z to see what its currently running at.


Problems with 1066Mhz DDR2 are very common - its one of the reasons i'm sticking with 800Mhz, until i go DDR3

You are overclock?

My guess is that your ram is higher then 1066 right now...

Also the only reason I raised the voltage was because I read that the ram is at 1.8 when using 800mhz. Either way it didn't make a difference in my case so I changed it back.

Your ram are not much overclock lol!

Try 6-5-5-18-32 at 2.1v or 2.2v

BTW: Your ram are rated for 2.1v then don't under volt the ram

I changed the timings 6-5-5-18-32 at 2.1V.

2.2v OCZ are very touchy when it comes to voltage, they need what they are rated at. Manually set your clocks to exactly what they are rated, youll be fine. If they act up after setting them, maybe RMA time.

I turned off cool and quiet, didn't know it was enabled. Is it possible that cool and quiet causes problems like this? Also it says 2.1-2.2V my board only lets me get up to 2.1 is this good? I also had these sticks for quite a while so I think it may be too late to rma lol.

memtest them. Hope they are ok. The price off DDR2 is crazy right now. :shadedshu Have you checked for a new BIOS for your mobo? Maybe a fix to the 2,1v limit.

I had a similar problem with my Corsair Dominator Twin2x2048 ran fine with just two dimms but 4 would make it crash was told to up the IMC (CPU north bridge) voltage from 1.2V to 1.4V now it's fine i also see your timing are the same as mine 5-5-5-15 CL2

It's a gigabyte board did you press CTRL+F1 in Bios?
It will let you see all hidden features/options in the bios

if your board has a limit of 2.1v and the ram wants 2.2v, that may well be a problem. Its nots guaranteed to be a problem, but its definitely possible.

yup i forgot to say that press ctrl + F1 you beat me to it... if all you can get out of your bord is 2.1v try lowering the timings to 6-6-6-18 CL2

My bios is the latest version F7, I tried the ctrl+f1 thing still 2.1V however. As for memtest I tried putting it on a floppy but I couldn't open rawrite because I am using a 64-bit os. I had a linux install disc Fedora-9 it had memtest86 on it but it thought my cpu was an opteron and my ram was 433mhz ddr2 still passed though lol . I am also using 6-6-6-18 CL2 now, i will test it out in bit.

Edit: crashed still lol. It doesn't just crash in gta 4, I was downloading something i came back to check and computer froze.

for hes board vdimm max is v2.1750 set your mem to max, raise north bridge voltage to 1.35v, put memory timings back to 5.5.5.15 2t, take my word for it, i own the same memory and owned a few am2/am3 gigabyte boards, another thing i noticed your cpu is at 1.456v that's to high for stock clocks, lower vcore to 1.35v

Well, I kinda still crashed. Maybe it's not the voltage? If it is there is not really much that can be done about it. The only other reason I can think of is overheating but everything is in the safe range below 40c/104f-50c/122f at max otherwise under 40c.

Please note a Memtest86 boot disc is an invaluable tool for testing RAM. Makes it more efficient and easier to check stability and you don't run the risk of crashing in game or, worst case, corrupting data or hosing your Windows install. The latter isn't exactly likely but possible.

But also, as others have mentioned, 1066 can be trickier, and giving these modules the max voltage your board are capable of is a good idea. For the extra performance you'll get out of 1066 vs 800, it's not a big loss to be stuck running them at a lower speed.
