I'm attempting to install Windows 7 on my desktop. So far the installation of the Windows itself has gone smoothly, however, when I attempt to load the software for my g/card (HD6850), either from the disk or downloaded from ATI/AMD, and it asks me to restart the computer to finish the installation, it then all goes wrong.
Upon restart I get the Windows welcome graphics but then when it enters the desktop the background image is set to 16:9, or thereabouts, and with no icons or navigation - nothing except the image.

What is causing this? Is it, as I suspect, a conflict with my aging Dual core E6400 CPU and Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard.
No problem encountered when using XP.

I think your monitor uses the 4:3 ratio, are you able to right click the desktop - ati tools or screen resolution and set resolution up? 1280x1024
You tried using the auto adjust button to re sync the monitor . or readjusting the scale/size on it
Or is it more of a issue the desktop/windows not starting up correctly ?

Is that Samsung 920N 19" really your monitor? EDID could be getting improperly detected and it could be defaulting to a higher resolution than what the display can actually handle. I would get a new monitor that use anything other than VGA.

Snake Doctor,
I think it is actually 5:4, probably not important. There is nothing to click, it is literally a 16:9 version of the stock background image with black bars top and bottom and nothing else, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. Prior to switching to W7, 1280x1024 was my preferred resolution on XP and, as mentioned, prior to installing W7, I had no problems using the g/card or the software, either supplied or downloaded.
I've not tried using the monitor controls but I'll give it a go.

Aquinus,
"Is that Samsung 920N 19" really your monitor?"

It is what it is.

Capslockstuck,
No, I've tried both the supplied disk and downloaded software from ATI/AMD's direct drop box download section of their site.
Should I be using it?

Tom.

HD 6000 and before should be using legacy drivers as support is discontinued in later drivers. 15. 7.1 is last whql driver and 16.2.1 is a crimson based legacy driver, ie. Crimson layout with 15.7.1s features

Gentlemen (ladies?),
Problem solved! Thanks to a someone over on Techspot who asked if I had anything else plugged into the G/card and the answer was 'yes', my TV via an HDMI. Even though the TV had never been on during this whole time I still unplugged the cable from the G/card and low and behold it now works. Obviously the software was muddling up the two outputs.

Id ensure motherboard bios is at the latest.
My Os install goes like this

OS, lan driver if needed
Windows updates till there are none or what askwoody doesn't recommend installing
Drivers
System tweaks.

My brother has a Sapphire 6770 on Win 7 with an Asrock 970 Extreme 4 on windows 7 with a monitor that is 1280x1024.

Im using a 290 on a 1280x1024 monitor that is adapted to DP.

I suspect EDID tables as well, don't forget monitors have specific drivers for them too.

Edit: some HDMI ports on TVs remain hot despite the tv being off, so it sends data. You might be able to separate the 2 displays in the driver...

Ah, yeah. It probably defaulted to using the TV as the primary display which would have mirrored the higher resolution TV on your monitor. I bet if you moved the mouse around, you probably would have seen more of the screen but never the entire thing at once. Bad EDID data and a strange resolution can make this happen as well. Glad you figured it out. :toast:
