Processor Intel Pentium 4 540 @ 3200 MHz
Motherboard MSI MS-7046
Cooling 4 fans processor fan running at 3000 rpms
Memory 3072 MB
Video Card(s) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X1300 Series
Storage WDC (80 GB)
Display(s) 22inch
Power Supply 450 watt
Software battlefield 2142, windows xp pro, call of duty 4
is 57 degrees C really bad for the processor? thats what I am at at the lowest cpu usage

so thats at idle? what cpu are you using (you should probably fill out your spec list) also what kind of cooler are you using? have you oc'ed at all? adjusted the voltage?

my cpu usage temp when playing battlefield 2142 is around 68 degrees C is that bad also

I have not over clocked at all and that is Idle I will fill out my specs right now. The fan I am using is just an intel 25 dollar fan with heat sink

processor is Intel Pentium 4 540 @ 3200 MHz

Yup get those specs filled out in the UserCP....but to the question at hand....those temps are a bit warm Id say even for a netburst CPU!

First step is most likely to reseat the CPU cooler with some new TIM (thermal interface material), AS5 or MX-2 are top pics to choose from!

thats fine for a netburst make sure there is no dust etc. if there is clean it up and it will cool down somemore

dust? where? the fan and everything was just put together yesterday.. Does that mean the fan is not good enough?

is it an intel HSF?

D60188-001 thats the model number this is the description. Intel Socket 775 Copper Core Heat Sink with Fan

where is the best place to buy that thermal paste stuff?

its good for an intel P4.. they ran hot period.. they are desigen to throttle down to avoid dmage if they get too hot.. too hot was around 100 C.. he he

read this.. some good info on intel stock coolers..

also bear in mind there are millions of the things out there with no (to my knowledge) reports of failure due to heat..

Them intel P4s always ran hot they were hard to cool. And the stock cooling wasnt very efficient at cooling. But with a good aftermarket cooler it will probably sit 48c to 50c idle maybe less. Also dont forget a good thermal paste like arctic silver 5 ,zalman, or the mx series paste.

I was kinda curious on this post too, cuz I IDLE at 50C, and I'm using Artic Silver paste. The heatsink I got with the CPU was a HUGE Zalman for a P4 but I did not occure to me to check that fine detail until a couple months ago. It's like I've stuffed 2 P4's under it,

I got the best paste it was like 10 dollars at best buy threw out the box but now I am running at 52 degrees idle and 64 with load but the fan is running 1000 rpm's slower does that mean that the mobo wants the cpu heat at 50 or so?? I don't understand this at all.. if the fan was running at 3000 like it was before the heat would be around 45 or less at idle why did the fan slow down?

so are the temps I getting bad for my processor

no the cpu runs hot its fine

Hmm... my s478 Prescott didn't run that hot, it was at like 47c idle but I guess that's not too far away from you!

Yeah just gotta make sure you get that heatsink on right the push-pin design can be screwy they say but it looks like you did it right.
