So my roommate has decided to get a PC. Thing is he is an AMD fanboy to the extreme, so I decided to add some candy to what he already had. He has the case, CPU, and motherboard already, what do you guys think? Leading him astray or giving him a good deal? (Never installed a liquid cooled GPU before)

I would recommend R9 390 or at most R9 390X if he really wants that 5% boost for 30% more money. With 390's, he would save money and these cards will run every single hardware-demanding new game for the next 4-5 years on max settings@1080p and very high/high settings@1440p. Not just that, but R9 390 will be capable to accomplish any other task just as good as any other high-end GPU.
Unlike popular belief, 390's will not noticeably increase his electricity costs. :D My electricity bills were up by 3% when switching from an older high-end laptop to a new high-end PC; total costs increase are comparable to two cups of ice cream on monthly basis - insignificant.

To the OP, you really need to talk your roommate into an intel system at least. $1200 for that just seems so...meh. Might want to beef up the PSU just a tad though if he sticks with that. A Fury X plus a FX chip is going to need some juice

NO WAY does he need a "full" tower case! They are HUGE!!!!! That Corsair full tower is made to support 13 drives! And 9 expansion cards! It is too big, too bulky, and too heavy. Great for a busy file server, but not a home PC.

Get a decent mid tower instead. I like Fractal Design.

The money saved by not getting the alternative cooler and a mid tower case will pay for the needed Windows license, since I don't see that listed. Note new computers need new licenses. OEM licenses (or upgrades based on OEM licenses) can NEVER "legally" be transferred to a new computer.

Sometimes AIO are easier to use in small format case. When you don't have a huge case but need a solid cooler, an aio will not take as much place as an high end air cooler. However, if you don't overclock they are a lot of small and silent air cooler that will do a decent job. But let's be real. Most aio looks more impressive visually. Bequiet cooler are class, but don't give that "high-tech" feel that aio often manage to give.

The only real advice you can give here, is to wait for Zen or move away from AMD and pick an Intel proc such as an i3 or i5. There's really no need to push your personal agenda here.

So pretty much it would cost an extra 100 bucks to get a i5 6600k with and z170 board.

399 seems fairly cheap for the fury x, i might pickup a 2nd one.

Alright folks. I just spent a bunch of time deleting and editing posts that were off topic (water versus air cooling). Please no more and stick to offering advice on the build or do not post.

ill recomend to get even an Haswell /devils canyon i5 instead that FX processor, also skylake i5,
then the case you listed on that build is a bit expensive for my personal thought....you could get a cheaper one or also near half the price, no need of such expensive one,
also get GTX 1060 over Rx one... better resale value if your friend wants to upgrade later...

regards,

That power supply is abit weak for that system anyways. Fx-8350 + fury x is like 450watts together.

What do you mean by he already have the cpu, the MB and the case ? He physically already have them, or he already made his choice ?

Appreciate that. Honestly he really is pretty adamant about things. And honestly I cant be bothered to steer him in the right direction if he is just going to be so argumentative every time I make a suggestion or read him the suggestions from the thread. So, for now its going to stick with a new PSU. And that'll be the end of it for the moment because he is being stubborn.

:/ I hope it was from an old system. Getting a brand new system at Amd doesn't seem a good idea right now since am3+ is really old and behind when it comes to the stantards supported. He could have waited for zen. For the gpu he can get a RX 480, it will be easier on the psu than a R9 390, and save some money if he want to uppgrade to zen later.
