Hi !

I currently have a geforce gts250 1gb which i think is getting a bit slow in the newest games.

So ive found a site where i can buy a gainward geforce gtx470 (the normal one with reference cooler and board) for 279euro including mafia2.

I think thats a pretty good deal ! And i think the gtx470 will be a serious increase in graphic performance.

However, i am curious, is my PSU enough for my system with a gtx470?

Computer specs:
Intel quadcore q9400 2.66ghz @ 3.41ghz
Corsair XMS2 ddr2 800mhz @ 850mhz
Asus p5q se2
Corsair VX550W
creative x-fi xtreme gamer
dlink dwa-556 xtreme wireless adapter

I dont know how much watt my system consumes, but my psu have the required connections for a gtx470, i could even connect a gtx480 to it (it has the connectors) without using molex adapters.

My question: will my psu be enough for my overclocked system if i pair it with a gtx470? I will NOT overclock the gtx470.

Tell me your thoughts. I wont upgrade my PSU unless i must because its clearly not enough for my system.

Regards

i ran my system on a 500W chieftec, so yeah i think its enough, but try and back the oc on the cpu down a bit, just to make sure :)

Alright, i could try tho, if its just a lil bit unstable, i might back the OC.

How much do i really need to overclock my CPU to not bottleneck a gtx470 u think? i am clearly not bottlenecking my current gts250....

Edit: What do u think about the pricedeal 279euro?

Both your CPU and PSU are fine for a 470.

VX550 puts out 41 Amps when brand new....depending on it's age...you could see instability.....GTX 470 requires 38-42 amps depending on the model....so your right at the edge.

Personally I would look into upgrading the PSU as well as it will only limit you in your overclock and may cause instability now or down the road.

Hope it helps. :)

If the 470 pulled 38 amps from the 12v rail, it would be drawing 456w of power. In reality, it doesn't draw even half that under 100% load. The 38a recommendation on cards like the EVGA 012-P3-1472-AR TX 470 is for the entire system, and even when it includes the entire system, that's allowing a lot of extra power for other components (easily more than Cratzky's rig will require). A 470 itself will draw a maximum of 15 to 20 amps at 12v, under 100% load (source).

However, even if all this were not so, I have no doubt that the 550VX is capable of putting out well over 550w safely. The other CWT-made Corsair PSUs have been shown to be consistenly underrated.

Agreed TIGR you are the only one give any decent advice

that PSU is more than enough for any single video card, other people love to overestimate corsair before you buy it and underestimate after you buy it. that wont pull more the 500W overclocked from the wall. that corsair will do 600W happily, they are very solid units, with a single RAIL PSU the use of adaptors wont make much of a difference...
i really dont understand why some people are suggesting he buys a better one when he has a brilliant PSU...

Goodluck mate

i think your setup will be fine.
like it has been said above your psu will put out more then 500w. Also the recommended for the video card is based on a system with specs that are overkill to most people and IIRC it is based on PEAK power and your PSU is rated by it's Continuous output. so you will be fine
