Hi all,

In my new(ish) build I experiencing a strange noise problem from the PSU (i think).

I have attached a video showing the noise.

Do you think I should seek replacement power supply. What could the noise be?

Edit: I have opened the PSU and found no obstruction to the fan or any other moving components in the tower.

Edit 2: The PSU is a Antec HCG-620M

That definitely sounds like a fan ticking against plastic or a wire inside of the PSU. Even seems like the fan changes speed making the ticking change with it. Could even be that the PSU fan grill is being pushed into the fan in that install. Pull it free of the chassis and see if it still makes noises.

yeah second what peet said, deffo sounds like something hitting the fan, i'd take psu out and give it a little shake see if something falls out, if all else falls take the PSU cover off and look, while its turned off btw lol

edit unplug the fan and manually spin it see if you can see or hear the problem then

Thanks for the replies.

I took of the fan grill and tried that twice. The fan made no ticking noises. I feel something may have gone loose inside however I don't want to open the PSU fully as I will void the warranty.

If you guys are certain its mechanical rather than electrical I will talk to Amazon and see what they can do.

Hey there Rahul, we try our best but we cant be 100% certain without the part in our hands, but give you the best advice we can, don't want you do to something that's not bang on, have you tried getting a torch and having a good look through the grill space to see if you can see anything.

Yes, I would deffo give Amazon an email/ring and see what their response is, I don't want you to ruin your warranty, but, yes it does ( to me ) sound mechanical, like something is catching a fan blade or even is a fan blade bend out to much, maybe the fan is hitting something not something hitting the fan if you know what I mean, have a try with Amazon and see what they say :) good luck :)

First, take a rubber hose and put it to your ear. It will help locating the source of the sound. It like a stethoscope.

Then take PSU out of the case and smack it. Put it on a bench and short test it. Stand by with a fire extinguisher. Do not just put it back in. Test it first

Something probably came loose or fell into it

Patrico, Thanks for the replies :). Something mechanical was my first thought aswell however I didnt find anything. Having spoken to Amazon they've agreed to give me full refund on this Power supply and they're paying for shipping aswell.

Jetster, Thanks for the suggestions. Nice idea with the rubber hose, I will try it. Re short testing I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that.

So it looks like I am in the market for a new power supply after I get my refund. What would you guys recommend?

Systems Spec
Intel i5-4690K
Zotac GTX970
MSI Gaming 3 Motherboard
One SSD and one one Mechanical Drive.

Again,
Thank you for the replies.

Pretty close to my setup, and I'm running an EVGA Supernova GS 650W, AFAIK that's Superflower internals, so you can't go all wrong with one of those.
Give us a list of PSU's within your budget, and I'm pretty sure somebody smarter than me will give you great advice.

The budget is roughly £70 GBP.

I am looking at few on PCPartPicker. What are the opinions on:

Corsair CX600M ~57.98 (highest rating on PCPartPicker)

These two seem to have a lot of three stars for loud fan noise on Amazon
EVGA 120-G1-0650-XR SuperNOVA NEX ~63.31
EVGA 220-GS-0550-V1 SuperNOVA GS ~57.35

XFX P1-650B-BEFX XTR ~69.98

Edit: PCPartPicker says my system needs 375Watts. Should I also consider 500W Supplies?

Your welcome Rahul, Handy Amazon is sorting the refund without any bothers, yeah I would always get a little more then you need, nothing wrong with a little overhead and you wont be pushing a lower wattage PSU to its limits, should last longer and if you ever need the extra wattage its there for you. Plus it will only draw the wattage that is needed so it wont affect your electric bill :)
