I’m going to rant on PSU manufacturers. Over that past year I’ve purchased about 4 PSU’s now and one thing that grinds my gears about them is not any single one box has the ATX version listed on it. On top of that it’s a challenge to find anywhere. It should be in big bold letters like the wattage and efficiency rating.

The ATX specification version does not really matter, though, unless you are interested in ATX version 2.51's ASM/"Modern standby" support.

IMHO, you should give heavy preference to a time tested, reliable platform over absolute newness, even older models should be highly compatible with modern systems, for example, I run an EVGA 1300 G2 that I acquired BNIB in 2019 (1st generation Super Flower Leadex GT, roughly a 10 year old ATX v2.31 platform) with my 5950X system to great success. Everything works as intended, including sleep mode, though I do not really make any meaningful use of that feature for me to care if the idle power is less than excellent - I turn my PC off when not in use.

If you want a modern, reliable and efficient ~1000W PSU nowadays, and money isn't much of an object, I would point you at the Corsair AX1000:

It would have been helpful if you had stated the manufacturer(s) you were complaining about.

Just looking at two, still in the box PSUs here, an Antec and an EVGA. Both clearly state the ATX version. ATX12V V2.3 for the Antec and ATX12V V2.32 & EPS 12V V2.92 for the EVGA. And note neither of these are from the maker's top tier lines.

That said, I am trying to decide if that information is really important. Like Dr. Dro, I don't see where it really matters. What I care about is wattage @ temp, efficiency, connectors and warranty. I also care about noise levels, regulation and ripple suppression but that information typically is not listed. Therefore, the suggestion to do your homework and look on the website and reviews before buying is sound advice.

Only importance ATX version brings is iirc Intel (or mostly Intel) brings new standards to the table. I don’t keep an eye on the market but I remember Haswell Ready PSU was all the rage back in day (jesus christ I'm getting old) because of some new C-states Intel introduced.

it matters in the sense just like what pcie or hdmi or DP version etc. yes it will run and yes it will work. But it is nice to know. It’s also a sign of age and with the upcoming changes it’s even more important. I agree with everything you and doc said. I’m just saying they should at least put the atx version the PSU is constructed to on the box.

There should actually be 3rd party testing to get a certified sticker for it like energy efficiency. I mean we have all seen PSU reviews where the PSU does not even meet the atx standard for ripple among other things. Maybe they should slap a big sticker on it Not ATX spec certified so you know you’re getting a pos.

The problem is, who is going to pay for that? The 3rd party tester is not going to do it for free. And the manufacturers cannot be expected to take that out of their profits. So that leaves those costs to use consumers.

No thank you.

Seasonic's platforms (with the exception of some low cost models like the S12 III) tend to be quite modern. If you purchase a Focus or Prime, especially the latter, you're pretty much golden. The AX1000 I mentioned earlier is a slightly modified Seasonic Prime Titanium platform and it's an extremely high performance, advanced power supply; you won't find anything better in the analog realm; you're basically looking at the AX1500i and the AX1600i to outperform it in efficiency and regulation. If you want to be ultra picky about maximum efficiency, real-time monitoring, high capacity and clean, manageable power, then you have to fork for a Corsair AXi series, they're the only power supplies that will provide what you're looking for. The 1500i is a few years old now, but remains a solid #2 in the PSU rankings, losing only to its newer GaN FET 1600 watt successor. TPU has reviews for both:

Fractal, like Corsair and EVGA, uses OEM platforms for their supplies. That's what reviews are here for, and Aris does an excellent job here at TPU and at Tom's disassembling them piece by piece and showing you the inner works of all PSU's. Perhaps his latest review shows precisely what I was trying to get at before, Gigabyte released the first "ATX 3.0 spec" power supply... it doesn't actually meet 3.0 standard and it performs as mediocre as it comes for a PSU of its capacity:

The tl;dr of it is that you really shouldn't worry about the ATX specification, it will not cause compatibility issues and if you're concerned about 12VHPWR/PCIe 5.0 very high power GPU connectors, most high end power supplies should receive adequate adapters or replacement cables to support these correctly. After all, if you intend to run a GPU that will use up to and perhaps even more than 600 watts of power, you want that to be on a single, high-current rail on a PSU sized 1000W or larger.

Well if they can put an erp 2013 sticker on the box they should be able to put the atx version on the box.

And yes it is great to have reviews. But what happens if the day ever comes there isn’t any. Maybe then will we need a 3rd party atx cert?? Maybe if gigabyte did that they could have avoided their PSU fiasco. In the grand scheme of things it probably wouldn’t even add $1 to the cost per unit.

No thank you.

First you have to get them to agree on the testing specs.

Like Bill said, it's never going going to happen and the brands sure as hell won't be paying for something that puts egg on their face.

Well just looked up the spec for my “brand new” fractal ion+ 660 platinum and it is listed on the website.

atx ver 2.4. Which according to the wiki was published in April 2013. 9 years ago lol

and use the pulldown menu in the upper right to select the GM-550.

I found this URL using something called an Internet search engine (DuckDuckGo in my case).

Try it out some day. :D

I don't see any specifications on the ATX version but that's something Seasonic customer support should be able to answer. It might be in a PDF manual somewhere.

Yes. I did find it and I went through all the docs. When I said I didn’t find it. I meant the ATX version for that model, not the webpage ;)

And the latest ATX specification that lets everyone know the requirements of the PSU

Sorry to hear that, was the rig plugged in to the wall socket via a surge protector?

What graphics card? Can't be rx480 in spec?

Latest gen GPUs are PSU killers with transient spikes, more so if OC them. Hence the new ATX spec.

I've only had a Zalman gigamaxx 750 watt bronze and a CWT 550 watt. Now I have a MSI MPG AGF 850 Gold, so I've learned something. Listen to recommendations on this here forum. :D

Sorry to hear that, was the rig plugged in to the wall socket via a surge protector?
Yeppers. A triplite. The fuse in there blew and my breaker. My son was a bit shaken when sparks flew out the back of the PSU. Not a high power system. RX 570 and an amd fx 8320 (65w)? If it wasn’t 6 months old and under warranty I’d pull it apart to see what failed.

Your boy saw his first fireworks. My Zalman failed like that, but I did unplug it whilst the pc was turned on. Get on the phone to them and claim for trauma to your son. Tell them it took out the rest of the compy too!
