should i get a W1 or W2 or go for the Bronze?for my Dell 580 from what he says a 500 white would be fine for my Dell.i3 550. 2tb hdd. 128ssd. HD7850 130W power draw.

I have an EVGA G1 750 gold I think..

What a piece of junk. I haven't experienced anything higher end from them.. I would avoid their lower end stuff for sure.

Edit:

Performance is ok, fit and finish feels like fisher-price.

Hi,
Dell uses weird plugs on their boards so make sure they match the new psu cables

EVGA wise I stick with the p2 series out of habit

EVGA is my preferred brand. But it should be noted all brands typically have several tiers or series of PSUs, from budget/entry level supplies up to top shelf premium. I never buy a budget/entry level supply from any maker.

Pick a supply then research that specific model number. You cannot just go by the brand name.

White is lowest level of 80 PLUS certification. While better than no certification at all, I would avoid them. I go for Gold, Bronze if on a tight budget. I avoid Platinum and Titanium unless they are currently being offered at a "too good to pass up" discount price. The problem with Platinum and Titanium is, in most cases it would take years of use for the savings from the miniscule energy costs benefits to make up for their higher purchase prices.

If unsure what the White, Bronze, Gold, etc. certifications mean, see 80 PLUS then scroll down and hover over the various icons.

Just remember, better efficiency is NOT an indication of better quality output, or a more reliable power supply. Efficiency is just one factor. Voltage tolerances (how close to exactly 3.3VDC, 5VDC, and 12VDC), ripple suppression, regulation, hold-up times, and other specs and features matter too.

Evga 100-Br-0500-K3 500 Br, 80+ Bronze 500W, Power Supply
48.50. Should i just go by how many reviews the item has? That one is 36 pounds used like new..40 pounds would be my max price that is what i paid for the PC three years ago with an old monitor.I saw some one mention BR when they talked about what to look out for ,does BR mean Bronze rated ,i take it does.
Is it a good thing to go on reviews on Amazon ?

Look at user reviews but do NOT put too much stock in them. With user reviews, it is important to note happy users don't complain. And most reviewers don't come back after they have used the product for a while to write reviews, so we don’t learn how the product holds up over time. Also, users typically don't have comparable products to compare with for proper side-by-side (A-B) comparisons, nor do they have properly equipped testing facilities or the necessary technical training for a proper evaluation.

Often times you will see products down-rated because it was a different color than shown in the picture, the Post Office delivered to the house next door, UPS delivered it a day late, or the box looked like it fell off the FedEx truck. So if I am considering a product, I read the user reviews but I don't put a lot of stock in them, UNLESS there are several complaining about the EXACT SAME genuine fault/defect with the actual product.

Do not try to trim the budget with a cheap supply. I like to ask, "Would you buy a fancy new Porsche then fill it up with generic fuel from the corner Tobacco and Bait shop?" An engine can miss a beat and keep on running. But high-speed digital electronic can't.

Note that 500W is plenty big for that computer. HOWEVER - that is an older Dell. Dell is notorious for using proprietary parts and I cannot find specs for your Dell that indicate it is using an industry standard ATX supply. :( You need to verify that before trying a standard ATX supply in that system.

if 40 pounds is all you have I suggest you don't buy a PSU right now until you have enough for a decent PSU save some more money ~100 pounds and then start looking for a PSU as you don't want to skimp out on what is literally the life blood of your PC basically stay away from 80+ white and bronze and go silver and up for efficiency and check out good reviews from sites like Gamers Nexus and the like they'll soon tell you whether or not a PSU is a good buy or not something along the line of this if you are stuck on EVGA Evga Supernova 750 G5, 80 Plus Gold

I agree with Athlonite - unless you must buy now, increase your budget or wait until you can increase your budget.

All good points there Bill.Of course eBAY are worse than that ,a lot of them don,t seem to try the product before they leave feedback and just mention about saying it arrived on time etc ,i must admit i used to be guilty of that.Yes 500w is.One 24-pin EPS 12V connector (ATX-compatible).I did message Tech Deals on Youtube but he has not got back to me.I did get in touch with someone who did put a new PSU in the 580 he put a ANTEC 500w in there unfortunately he did not show him putting it in there. .There does not seem any problem putting new PSU,s in optiplex's. all though you need another lead to convert to 24 pin.
Another person had put a new PSU in the inspiron 580 i messaged him and this was his reply *For an inspiron 580 you should be able to use any a non proprietary ATX power supply as that machine still used standard power supplies. That psu I am using is from an XPS 8300, but that's standard ATX so just get a decent psu and install it.*This is another guy who has put a new PSU in another Antec
ATX
This is the guy i asked about what PSU could go in it.
I might go for i7 870 if all goes well.

I can,t believe that.I thought EVGA were one of the top brands.
Brand (same as watts alone) isn't an indicator for anything really. EVGA has great units but also shit tier units like the W or B series.

49 reviews on Amazon
Once again. Reviews, unless done by reputable sources, aren't worth anything, let alone on an e-commerce site.

for my Dell 580 from what he says a 500 white would be fine
The wattage is fine, you could get a 450W unit and still get away with it, if it was my computer I'd get a CX450 for it and call it a day.

used like new
Don't do this. I could pretty much grab any scrap PSU from my workshop, clean it up a bit, replace its fan and even its housing and it'd look "used, like new" or like an entirely different unit although it's not. If I know how to do that then scammers know as well.

I'd just save for a better quality unit like Athlonite said.

You are so right in what you say.I think that goes for anything there ,are all ways some people who say something is bad and others have the opposite view. The other thing is seeing how the the 130w power draw card works with the Dell if it works ok i want have to bother with getting a New PSU .500w would be fine.

I think you or whoever told you that mixed up older inspirons with older inspiron 580
Nobody told me anything here. I am going with personal experience with many older Dells (and HPs, Acers, and other big factory brands) coming into the shop. Many used proprietary parts because they could go to the OEM suppliers and promise to buy 1,000,000 units over the next year and so demand cheaper prices and proprietary modifications to force users to buy replacement parts only from them. :(

If you are certain your Dell uses an industry standard ATX supply, then great!

Telling someone to please buy something so it will burn up their system is not, in any way, being constructive - regardless if you believe you were last time, or not.

If the OP asked the exact same question before, posting a link back to that thread and letting the mods deal with it would have been constructive. You were just being hateful here.

Time to move on.

What is the difference between the the CV450 and the CX450?Does that still apply on Amazon used like new?

I have an EVGA G1 750 gold I think..

What a piece of junk. I haven't experienced anything higher end from them.. I would avoid their lower end stuff for sure.

Edit:

Performance is ok, fit and finish feels like fisher-price.

Really? I have the same unit, what kind of finish would you expect that's not there?

Internally the unit is nearly top tier. Better than the spinoffs that came after.

Really? I have the same unit, what kind of finish would you expect that's not there?

Internally the unit is nearly top tier. Better than the spinoffs that came after.
The plugs and cables feel ultra cheap, but the performance is ok.. it’s running my 3770K/980 Classified system just fine.

This is the thing outpt was taking about people with differing views on products.

Yeah, they are as basic as they get, definitely lol

Differing views sure but its also good to call a spade a spade. And with that I mean, for PSUs, preference is bullshit. All that matters is the technical aspect, the quality of the platform. Preference won't improve a PSU in any way shape or form, heck in most cases even with a window you won't ever see it.

Every PSU hunt should simply be two steps:
1. What are the most reliable platforms & OEMs on the market and what price points do they offer.
2. What's the budget.

Nothing wrong with evga. If you read about every psu there was you wouldn’t be buying a ps from anyone.
600 w would be absolutely fine.or 500w
This gotta be a joke.

What is the difference between the the CV450 and the CX450?Does that still apply on Amazon used like new?
The CV lacks a pure DC-DC topology, in simple terms with a DC-DC design, AC (alternating current) from the wall socket is only rectified and converted once to DC (direct current) which is then used to feed 12, -12 (if present), 5, -5 and 3.3 volts lines. By converting AC to DC twice (once to get 12V and again for 5/3.3) you end up wasting energy as heat, it's cheaper but less efficient. Although both converters are isolated (this superseded the old group regulated design) it's worse than using what's basically a bigger transformer and higher quality transistors to swap DC to DC.

For the others feel free to improve that explanation.

A CV won't burst into flames unless you do something weird with it and is just enough for a starter build that uses integrated graphics or a low end graphics card. At least it's not a TR2.

As already stated, most all mfgr's have low, middle & top tier products.... some are ok, some are great, and others are crap....

Having had alot of positive experiences with EVGA's G2 & G3 lines, I can say that even though they may not be "da bomb" of top tier models, they do perform well, look good, run quiet, and last a fair amount of time, and usually can be had for a fair price too :)

However, I can say the same thing about the many Corsairs & Seasonics that I have owned over the years, so as usual, YMMV, but for any average user with modestly average demands, any of the above would do just fine, as I am sure would other brands/models too....

But just to reiterate the other's warnings, Dell and most of the other pre-built pc mfgrs use proprietary connectors, cables and form factors, so upgrading them may or may not be a real P.I.T.A.....

Good luck with your quest :D
