Q2VKPT - pathtraced Quake 2

This client implements fully dynamic illumination without precomputation supporting area light sources, reflections, soft shadows, and indirect illumination. This client is a port of our real-time path tracer vkpt and is based on the Quake II engine Q2PRO.
This client requires a high-end GPU supporting the Vulkan extension VK_NV_ray_tracing.

I suppose the last part means it currently requires RTX card.

Gave it a try, generally hitting 40-50 fps @ 3440x1440.

In dark areas with the default blaster, its quite cool seeing the projectile lighting up as it travels the length.

But yeah, need a texture pack or something at least, lol.

With a 2080 Ti? That sounds like an indictment for a game with very minimal graphics with ray-tracing added.

It looks like there are minimal modifications made to the engine, that's why it still looks like old Q2.
Good for a college project, but definitely a far cry from what we've seen 10-15 years ago from Intel and iD (Q4, Quake Wars, Wolfenstein[2009]).
Just look up Larrabee demos. Might be feasible to do that level of detail on today's cards even without RTX support.

No and no. It's a one-person weekend project, tinkering with idtech2 (clearly by someone who doesn't eve know how to use it).
Sayin' just in case... Before this grows into full-blown "Look, raytracing sucks" thread.

Pretty cool IMO for a hobby project.

If there is one thing this shows it is the ease to implement ray tracing, which is a very positive thing. The famous 'It just works' Huang quote.

The quality and performance of it however, is where it has a lot of ground yet to cover.

It should be noted that this isn't Raytraced, but Pathtraced, which is significantly different (and with path tracing having a higher performance cost).

Yep, expect a slide show though, at least until AMD figures out how to fit RT extensions into RPM.

If the driver doesn't support the extension, I don't think it would work at all to be honest. There is a reason why GPU drivers report what operations they're capable of handling.

It's a nVidia extension to Vulkan. It really boils down to support for the operation and I seriously doubt Vega has support for such a new nVidia specific extension. Phoronix has a good article on this, but I suspect it's specific to RTX cards at the moment.

VKPT has been around for a while as a tech demo before RTX and shit. And there are fallback paths for RT.

Can you provide some links and sources because I'm curious. If it does have a fallback, I wouldn't mind trying it just for shits and giggles. I tried looking for these demos, but all I'm seeing is everything pointing to Q2VKPT. Even Quake 2 on Vulkan was released last December which doesn't make it very old (less than a month ago.)
