Alrighty, got my new watercooling kit in and am loving it, but i am having problems overclocking my q6600. With a 400fsb with a 6x multiplyier (= 2.4ghz which is stock) and a 1.5v core its not stable, but with a 334fsb and a 9x multiplier (= ~3ghz) at 1.2v it is stable... so it seems something else other than my cpu... Here are my BIOS settings, most I'm not sure what 99% of them do, so any info on how to change them would be greatly appreciated.

CPU Feature:
Thermal Management Control - Disabled
PPM (EIST) Mode - Disabled
Limit CPUID MaxVal - Disabled
C1E Function - Disabled
Execute Disable Bit - Enabled
Virtualization Technology - Enabled
Core Multiprocessing - Enabled

Voltage Settings:
CPU VID Control = 1.525v
CPU VID Special Add = Auto
DRAM Voltage = 2.1v
SB 1.05v Voltage = 1.150v
SB Core/CPU PLL Voltage = 1.55v
NB Core Voltage = 1.41v
CPU VTT Voltage = 1.25v
Vcore Drop Control = Enabled
Clockgen Voltage Control = 3.45v
GTL + Buffers Strength = Strong
Host Slew Rate = Strong
GTL RFF Voltage Control = Disable

DRAM Timing:
Enhanced Data Transmitting - Auto
Enhanced Addressing - Auto
tCL = 5
tRCD = 5
tRP = 5
tRAS = 15
DIMM 1 CLK Fine Delay - Current[13]
DIMM 2 CLK Fine Delay - Current[5]
DIMM 3 CLK Fine Delay - Current[12]
DIMM 4 CLK Fine Delay - Current[4]
*everything else in this section is set to auto

Other settings...
CPU, PCIE, SATA Spread Spectrum are all set to Disabled
Bootup Clock - Auto
Clock VCO Divider - Auto

Thanks for the help!

I can totally help you!

This will get you to around 3.6 - 3.7ghz @450Mhz FSB

I'm just noting things you should change. Otherwise you have a good setup.

Execute Disable Bit - Disabled
Virtualization Technology - Disabled

CPU Clock Ratio = x8
CPU Clock = Try 400 first read temps, push 420, stable/temps, ie until = 450 if stable push to 460 if stable push to 463
Boot Up Clock = Auto
DRAM Speed = 266MHz/667MHz
PCIE Clock = 100

CPU VID Control = 1.40
CPU VID Special Add = auto
DRAM Voltage Control = 2.1 (assuming your ram can run safely at this voltage)
SB 1.05V Voltage = 1.07v
SB Core/CPU PLL Voltage = 1.55v
NB Core Voltage = 1.61
CPU VTT Voltage = 1.60v
VCore Droop Control = disabled
Host Slew Rate = weak

GTL REF Voltage Control = Enabled (This is super important for Quads)
x CPU GTL1/3 REF Volt = 115
x CPU GTL 0/2 REF Volt = 115
GTL REF Volt = 117

Enhance Data Transmitting = Fast
Enhance Addressing = Fast

Should be pretty nice!! Once you hit that I can help you hit 4.0.

I disabled the Vcore Droop Control. In my BIOS its actually at 1.5v, not 1.52v.

there is a control for that? for me i had to pencil mod my mobo to stop vdroop.

can you drop you voltage at all, and still keep it stable?

i dont even know if im stable right now at 4ghz, if i am i think i would try to push it alill further to see whats the max at this vcore then try to make it stable with a little bit of temp play... but hey my goal was at least 4ghz so im a happy man right now!

edit, yes there was an option for me in my BIOS to disable the Vcore Droop.

try a program called OCCT, its hardcore on the cpu, if your stable for at least 30 mins you should be good.

EDIT: watch your temps tho, OCCT will tax your cpu or cpu and ram depending on how you set it, its like a massiver version of sim city 4.

heres Prime95 25.6 you dont need more then one to run as I can see in your desktop it runs each core on its own say you have dual core it well run two and Q four

just keep running your program runs and if it goes 8 or 10 hours in Prime95 you should be good. 24 if you want to make sure its really stable. If it is then drop your voltage by a notch each time. good luck with it.

Very nice, looks like those settings worked out for you.

Yeah for the quad to maintain 4.05Ghz you need 1.52+ voltage to be stable, and it runs very hot. Not sure what your w/c setup is like. But I have a triple radiator with 3 120mm fans on it. This just barely keeps my temps under 55C under load.

pepsi71ocean: I can try. I am not 100% sure of the Bios options in your mobo. do you know what seems to be limiting your OC?

yay! no where near stable, but still trying to bench... not benching anything that will max it out, just trying to up my voltage so that idle will be close to my max load temps and then run super pi... this is it so far... i could probably get 4.3ghz, but really dont want to try bc its going to take a lot more voltage!

That is the max I pushed mine was 4.2Ghz, but the stepping voltage/Mhz ratio is insane after 3.9Ghz. I figure I could have hit 4.3 but the temps at idle where already in the high 50's.

I think to get stable above 4.1Ghz you start going into extreme cooling solutions. LN2, Peltier...

There were a few, i had to modify my cooling solution a few times, then i had to do the pencil mod for my mobo for vdroop. I'm not exactly sure but i think its temperatures for the NB and Sb chipsets, My modified cooling solution involved rotating the HSF to verticle so it sucks cold air in from the top of the pc and it dropped my temps by about 10c degrees. It also dropped my NB chipset by about 5c at the same time. My NB reaches about 55 now. Outside that im not sure.
