Perhaps you should start off with an even 3.0ghz.

yea, all that requires is a bump in fsb up to 333, maybe a little voltage.

you wanna try that again?
check hwbot, many of the top oc's on this chip are on the abit aw9d max or the asus p5w dh, both are 975x boards.
Link?
Those couple silly results with high FSB (>>FSB300) are on QX67/800 procs with multipliers much higher than 9. Good thing you mentioned HWBot - it prefectly proves my point: i975X can't do >>FSB300 with quadcores. With dualcores i975X is much better, it usually reaches a little bit over FSB400.

HWBot:
Spi1M max FSB w/ Q6600:
AW9D @ FSB313
P5W-DH Dlx @ FSB333

Spi32M:
AW9D @ FSB300
P5W-DH Dlx @ n/a (nobody has submitted a result)

3DMark06:
AW9D @ FSB300
P5W-DH Dlx @ n/a (nobody has submitted a result)

3DMark05:

Random Murderer,
So is this a "rebound-PWN"?
yea, all that requires is a bump in fsb up to 333, maybe a little voltage.
Not gonna happen I'm afraid.

Apparently this has opened the flood-gates, lol..

Nothing against what you say Largon.. but I've spent some money on this system for OC'ing and I HAVE to go with the optimism.. They say it can be done, I believe it.. just need a how-to.

Start by setting vMCH to 1.7V (max?).

Random Murderer,
You're on P5W-DH Dlx.
It sure is a Glenwood board but it's not as FSB limited as AW9D is. He'd be lucky if the board did 3GHz with the quad.

obviously you have not done your research, i have seen quads at 3.6 on this board over at xs, lemme see if i can find a link.

the thing you hafta remember to do is set the fsb strap to 1066 to loosen up the mch timings a bit and allow for fsb's in the range of 450.

EDIT: check this out, largon.

I'm getting pretty frustrated here.. It's discouraging to hear that I've wasted money.. that I can't OC my moneys worth... that there is no definitave answer on what is or is not possible with 3.0-3.2 Ghz.

Let's try to get some more imput on this from other AW9D Max users.

ok, talk to sneekypeet and ketxxx and w1zzard.
guys, the 975 chipset isn't as bad at overclocking quads as everyone says, it just requires more work than other chipsets. the 975 chipset is finicky as hell at first, but eventually, with some research, patience, and persistence, it'll lay back and accept it.

I have to agree here. The 975 is finicky, it's why I went with a P35 board, but you will get at least 3Ghz on that quad no problems. Anything over will require work.

I'm going to push this just for personal interest, but you're going to have to do better than that thread on XS. Link directly to the post you're talking about, I'm not going to read all those over six thousand posts to find a one post where someone was lucky enough to crank a golden board to FSB400 on a quad.

found it, it wasn't xs, it was cpc, and it wasn't 3.6, it was 3514, but still very respectable for a q6600 on a p5w!

There's not much you can do except to try it:
Set FSB to 333MHz, bump vCore and vMCH a notch or two, run memtest86+ to see if it's safe enough to boot OS.

The question is: 1 out of how many P5W-DH 1.04Gs does FSB400 3DM06 stable?
Anyways, AW9D seems to be far, far away from FSB400.

Some of you take overclocking so seriously. So this guy has a crap combo, at least he can do something with it.

O RLY?
look what chip wins two out of three, and the one it came in second in was by such a small amount it doesn't really matter.

Reading this thread sorta disgusts me. Stop arguing about the 975X's overclocking limits, and AMD vs Intel and start helping this guy already-actually we already have.

We answered your question and honestly, I don't think its really a neccessity to overclock! Honestly the 975X boards are poor overclockers in whole in contrast to the 965, and above. You would have to bump the voltage of the Northbridge considerably, 1.65 or 1.7v, which runs fairly hot in addition.

I'm getting pretty frustrated here.. It's discouraging to hear that I've wasted money.. that I can't OC my moneys worth... that there is no definitave answer on what is or is not possible with 3.0-3.2 Ghz.

Let's try to get some more imput on this from other AW9D Max users.

if you had done more research, everyone reccomends P35 or X38 chipsets for quad core OCing :) - not the older 975x

400 FSB is easy for quads on my P35, whereas my 965 and 650i boards stopped in the 300-333 range.

Just OC as high as you can, and tweak the voltages as low as possible. 2.66Ghz is still faster than the 2.4 stock, and it will run nice and cool with no risk of overheating at such low levels.

I don't think I worded my frustration correctly, and I think some of you may have taken it personally. I'm not frustrated with anyone here, and I really really appreciate all of the input everyone has provided!

I'm only frustrated because I didn't make the best combo decision for my 3.2 wishes and it wasn't cheap. Sorry if anyone took that the wrong way..

I'd never get frustrated any ANYONE for offering help and advice! :toast:

I'll see what happens and post my results. :)

Just try the 3ghz first than stress test it and watch temps make sure it is stable. If everything checks out fine start upping it a little more till you feel the temps are too much or it isn't stable.Don't let it go over the max temp recommended by Intel.
