the q9650 is still so expensive because it is an amazing chip. people automatically assume it is old tech but it still blows away any i5 out there in real world applications and when overclocked keeps up with the slower i7s

Thats a fact......on my i7 @ 4.2Gig with turbo and HT on I get about an extra 600 CPU points in 3D Mark 2006 over the Q9650 @ 4.4gig, but that thing ran cooler on less volts.... the perfect solution for air cooling! I also have a friend over at Xtreme, who got his Q9650 to 4.8gig on air on a P45 Gigabyte DQ6 :eek:

i can OC from 3.0 ghz which is stock to 3.6 with no effort at all. i have a megahelams sitting on it and it never gets hot. it is the sole reason why i do not upgrade to an i7.

If the Q9650 is hitting the wallet hard look for a Q9550 E0. They are a bit cheaper ($170ish@microcenter). They clock/Perform just as well. The whole 12meg cache series is just awesome. They run very cool and require low voltages for the clock speeds they run. As far as I have seen one of those @4GHz will not bottleneck anything within reason.

Hmm...now this thread has me debating not upgrading my monitor and upgrading from a Q6600 to a Q9650...I can find them used around the $270-300 mark here and there...but they are hard to find indeed. All I can read is how amazing they are overall, and that i5's really aren't much better and that it smokes a Q6600. I wouldn't mind a more powerful and efficient quad in my setup to keep my 775 build going for a while longer. Plus the hit is much easier to take than the 4-500 I was trying to save up for a 32" HDTV to replace my 24" monitor...hmm...decisions...decisions... I'd love to see what my P5Q DLX does with a Q9650! :D

Shame ya cannot get some one from the US to sell ya one.. 250 quid is taking the piss. I got my 9550 of buck nasty some moths ago no were near that price ( $170 ).
