Hello, with the announcement that they are due to phase out the requirement for a FB account in 2022 I have a question for owners of the Quest 2 that previously had/have older hardware, like the Rift.

I have an Oculus account for my Rift, that's not currently tied to a FB account, so if I was to get the Quest 2 would I have to link the accounts or would I be ok since I have a pre-existing Oculus account that I could log onto the Quest 2 with?

That’s a good question and I’d like to know the answer as well.

I have an Oculus Rift v1 (currently shelved) and an Oculus Quest v1 both of which use an Oculus account. After the Oculus Connect 2021 event which yielded no noteworthy VR HMD hardware for immediate sale, I opted to buy an Oculus Quest 2 128GB version. It was delivered on the 29th and I haven’t opened it yet because I’m out of town.

I wasn’t clear on what FB meant with respect to not needing a FB account in the future (2022 / 2023). Was it with all Oculus VR HMD models? Was it intended only for business VR HMD models? Were they trying to be clever and we’re only really referring to a name of a service (achieving the same ends with a different service with a different name)?

Questions abound. Personally I’m just going to setup the Oculus Quest 2 with a FB account. Either I’ll setup the Quest 2 with a family members account or I’ll just use the very old one I setup years ago and never really used.

I never setup my Quest v1 with a FB account and it was supposedly going to be compulsory. Not sure how that could be legal but that is what they were asserting.

Everyone really is over hyping the fact that you need a facebook account to use the Quest 2. You just create a facebook account and login to the quest 2. That's it.. you have to opt into let people you know see you from Facebook. It's really no different than a Playstation account, Xbox Account, Apple account.. You don't need to use facebook at all. I have never seen a facebook feed in my headset.

That’s a good question and I’d like to know the answer as well.

The way I understand it is that when it's ready we can choose to disconnect our FB account to a new "Meta" account.

indeed,…

While I am not trying to over complicate matters, it still isn’t clear to me if this is just an issue of semantics. I don’t know that I want a “Meta” account any more then I want a “FB” account and I’m quite sure many people feel the same way.

Having said that, I already have a FB account that I setup many moons ago and have literally ignored for years. It’s still active though and I logged in recently to verify it’s viability. So basically I’m OK with using it,……..for now.

Exactly! You will see what I mean when you login with your FB account. Once you get logged in and do the tutorial go into the settings and you'll see what I mean about turning on where FB friends can see you if they have an Oculus. Now, I'm not going to say that in 3-5 years will it be as bad as everyone is saying it is right now.. I feel it won't matter by then I will be using something else by then if they do, but I'm going to take advantage of the Quest 2 that they are losing money on to build the Metaverse.

It's only a matter of time before we start seeing competition, but once the market is there then we should have all kinds.

Sure, sure,….

It is a key point that FB is selling the Oculus Quest 2 at a loss. I’ve said it before, if people take issue with FB then there is no greater affront to the company then buying an Oculus Quest 2 and using it outside of their intended use.

Not buying it doesn’t necessarily matter to the company because someone else will.
