Question about 3D encoding

Hi guys. I'd like to better understand the differences between the types of encoding I see for 3d movies. I've noticed different types of format and I wonder what are the ups and downs of them.

Here are the formats I'm talking about:

SBS
OU
HSBS
HOU

What are the differences and advantages vs weaknesses of each?

SBS is two full 1920x1080p views meshed together. HSBS is two views subsampled to 960x1080p meshed together. Full SBS is higher quality, but a much larger file size.

EDIT: Think about SBS as being a 3840x1080p file, while HSBS is a 1920x1080 file.

I don't know of OU, but I imagine it's the same. The H stands for Half.

I'm just not sure how SBS differs from OU
They're both 3D but I wonder what's the point of going with one over the other

They're both 3D but I wonder what's the point of going with one over the other

From what I gather OU is smaller in size for the higher quality file type, but is lower in quality in general. With full OU each eye sees 1920×540 (minus a few hundred pixels for the black bars at the top and bottom in most films, so more like 1920x450), whereas with full SBS each eye sees 960x1080 (again, minus the black bars). SBS is overall better image quality. Now they both technically give you the same amount of pixels in total, but the important issue is the resizers your hardware uses. In most cases, the OU coding method makes it harder for the hardware to resize it, so you'll get some slightly less than ideal results. SBS just produces an overall better quality, but at a fairly large file size.

YouTube I believe assisted in the creation of OU because they couldn't handle the SBS coder on their videos. That problem has long since gone though.
