Folks,
I have a stupid question, if I buy 2 sticks of 8GB memory kit, note: they don't come in as dual package meaning separate. When they are plugged into the ram sockets, will they be operating as dual channel?

Channel config is about the slots you populate on the board.

There is a chance the RAM is not compatible though, and you'll have to run it at stock or lower speeds/timings

Yes, *provided you plug them into the correct slots (ie A1/B1 or A2/B2, not A1,A2, check your manual if you aren't sure.)

They won't be guaranteed to work well together, even if they're the same model there's sometimes differences in the chips used or the spd data, you might have to mess around with frequency, voltage, timings and stability testing.

edit ^beat me to it :p

Well, if you buy 2 sticks (not in kit) they should work normally, with the lowest, common specification if you plug them correctly on the board a1-b1 or a2-b2.
My experience that intel is more torelable with this than amd, but in both case should work.

As long as it's DDR3 you're after, should be good :)

edit- not sure if the system you're putting them in is capable of 2400mhz tho, I skipped the DDR3 era stuff so I'll tap out here, but if you list the cpu and motherboard others can better answer if it's a good choice.

So long as the ram runs at the same speeds and the same timings, it doesnt matter if they are different brands.

Check the ram anyway as sometimes manufacturer will release different revisions so even if its the same model and part number version 1 might not like to play nicely with Version 2 - I had the same problem with some Kingston ram that i thought were the same, Same brand, same speed but different revision.

It will stress out your memory controller on the CPU so your CPU might run hotter, your PC might not be 100% stable and your games and other apps might crash when youre using them due to 'mismatched' ram.

Is 1866MHz the fastest?

Dual channel memory is a matched pair, when they are not matched you may get undesirable effects of non matched ram in dual channel configuration. To configure your ram in a motherboard for dual channel read the manual.

I did the same back with my 4790K, bought two unmatched sticks of Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR3 2133MHz. Cost was less as a single stick at the time.

I still the have RAM somewhere in the pile of hardware.

By buying kits of 2/4/+ you have a guarantee that all of them are in the same revision.
Different revisions of the same stick may use different chips.

Are they running dual channel without problems?
