Question about psu rails

On a psu when there is 2 rails of 12v which one is the v1 and the v2? Is it always cpu=v1 and molex/sata=v2?? Can it be reversed sometimes? Im asking for a sound system project. Thank you

It all depends on the manufacture. There are expensive multi rail systems, +12V virtual rails and there are cheap systems that are actually one rail split into two. There is no answer to that question until you look at a particular unit

It's a cheap @$$ one branded @-power with no sata and for AMD-P4 back in time.

without knowing exactly, I'd have to guess that it isnt a true dual rail being a cheap off brand unit.

Whatever you are doing, I hope the hardware is replaceable... running a cheap psu like that on anything is a risk...especially something that old.

Not really sure how I got that! Just know that dual rail psus tend to be cheap... avoid them.

Just to make a point that multi rail power supply's aren't necessarily cheap. Here's a four rail Enermax that cost's about $250
So it not the number of rails you should be concerned about

This one has only one rail of course but after I really tested the setup I wanted to install a 2 rails for safety and power reason thats why I was asking about dual rails.

There's nothing safer about having two rails over one

That isnt true either...

And just because a psu says its multi rail, doesnt mean it's a true multi rail psu either (meaning a rail can output well more than its rated for or the whole power. It really depends on the psu.

Man that thing is ancient. I wouldn't use it on a modern system.. That psu is from an era where 3.3v and 5v were the focus. The 12v rail only has 17a, and there is only one..

you need "DC-DC Isolating Converter" for 12V circuit to get clean and distortion free audio.

Isn't the max current divided by 2? Just thinking in case of a short circuit, it will be safer? (less energy involved)

EDIT: I just came across this article. That's a lot of energy!

OT: I bought a used Corsair RM1000i, and I believe it has a switch for selecting multi/single rail operation. I also think multi rail is the default setting, any reason I should switch to single? (safety not considered)

Depends on the power needs of your components. If you don't have enough power on a single rail to drive what is attached, that can cause issues (and part of the reason single rail monsters were popular 10 years ago and still now - there are no worries about the rails).

actually then you don't know much about PSU

Real multi rail PSU are expensive with virtually all of them 1000w or more. What most people mean when they state a multi rail PSU under 1000w is a single rail PSU with the 12v split into two, three, or four. Regardless, the split matters little in the actual performance of the PSU as platform, internal parts, and build quality are far more important to PSU performance.

Too often we see mis-prioritized requests for PSU advice: Asking "what single +12V rail PSU should I get" when the person isn't even running SLI! Unless you're running a plethora of Peltiers in your machine, it should be a non-issue assuming that the PSU has all of the connectors your machine requires and there are no need for "splitters" "
