Question about radeon hd 4870

Hi Im a noob and this is my first built. my graphic card HIS radeon hd 4870 seems to be a little too hot... is it suppose to be at 60 degrees celcius at 50% fan speed? If its too hot what can I do to cool it down?

I don't think that is too bad. At no load, I'm sitting at 62*C at 47% fan speed. I believe the 48xx series has a high max temperature tolerance?

really? I was just checking out other sites and they said their temps are around 40c idle with 45% fan speed. :/

thats about right! 45C should be more accurate! However u must keep in mind that there are several things effecting your card. The card cooler, the case air-circulation, the ambient temp etc....

which model is your card and if u can post a pic of the inside of the case, so that we have a clear picture....

The other thing you could do is remove the cooler off the card, replace the TIM with something better (e.g. AS ceramic or something like that) and you'll probably get a 5C drop on temps...

It was the same model but different companies.
not sure about what clock they were running at but mines running at 770.

Well I can show you whats inside my computer but I dont have a camera to take a picture of the actual thing.. I will try to borrow a camera and take a picture. My card is HIS radeon HD 4870 iceq4+

Play a game or something that is graphically intensive for a while. I just played resident evil 5 for 15 minutes and the auto fan kept the temperature at 68*C.

Do you know a game called Sudden Attack? Its not graphically intensive but when I play this game I set the fan to 60-70% and the temp is around 65-70C

and when you stopped laughing at what looks like a sneezed on mess,replace it with the good stuff [arctic silver i prefer] and watch 15 to 20 degrees drop off your gpu temps

until someone fixes the bios fan settings and releases it,it`ll do.

Unless you have a fan aimed at your mobo when running with the side off its likely you won't have great temps. The ATX spec describes airflow being sucked in at the front and exhausted to the rear. It is this circulation which removes heat. You need a closed case for this to happen properly, if the side is open then the air drawn in by the front fan can escape. This can lead to hotspots unless there is airflow blowing at the PC.

AC MX-2 is the better idea.
AS5 is conductive and if you mess up on the GPU, poof it goes.
