hi , i've been using a sapphire 280x dual-x OC for the last 2 days and i've noticed a rattling noise coming from the fan when i'm playing some demanding games.

I've already lowered the gpu clock thinking it might help but no.
my question is : should i lower the fan control (%) from 50% (default) to about 35% ,because the rattling seems to begin allways when the fan goes very very fast? I've read that it might hurt my system due to overheating the gpu. I just want the rattling noise to go away , i have to force shutdown my game when the rattling happens and it's quite frustrating. Any suggestions ?

system specs
motherboard z87 g45
WD blue 3.5" 1tb 7200 RPM hard disk
SSD SATA III v300 120gb
2x 2gb Kingston ddr3 1600
Cooler Master extreme 2 525W PSU
Sapphire r9 280x dual-x OC 1050Mhx clock 1500Mhz memory clock
i5 4430 3.0 GHz

edit: i can't RMA the card

The fan may be poorly screwed into the shroud, or unbalanced (I've seen cards with one blade broken off, and the resulting unbalanced load gets worse as RPM increases).

I wouldn't monkey with fan settings. I'd crack the card open, make sure everything is there and intact, and take the opportunity to clean it when you're there.

If everything is intact, clean, and you've still got rattle then it may be time to get a new fan.

That's just a fan defect, which is not rare for that type of assembly. My friend recently brought a GTX560Ti which did the same thing.
Take the card out of the case, unscrew both fans, clean with compressedair and use some WD40. Also check, if there are any scratches on surrounding plastic or dents on aluminium fins - this is usually a sign of wobbly fan (loosened at high RPM), or damaged one. In that case you can try and tighten screws on each fan, or if it did not help, buy replacement fans on ebay
