Question: System shuts down after a couple of minutes?

I have an Asrock X58 Extreme with Core i7 920 450w power supply geforce 9600 vid card, now I did the build from scratch into a brand new tower everything is nice and tidy etc etc,

However

After the system runs for a period of time not more then 3min it just turns itself off.

Each time it powers up it shuts down even quicker.

1st power up runs 3min

2nd power up runs 1min

3rd power up runs 30sec

etc etc.

Cmos Posts 00 as code which to my knowledge is Norm to run OS which would tell me its not a MB issue unless I am wrong.

I am trying to get a temp reading before the sys shuts off.

Any Ideas?

Try to get that temp reading. It's possible the CPU is overheating and the system is automatically shutting down. If you can't get a temp reading, reseat the CPU cooler.

erocker is right . I think you need to recheck your HSF make sure it is seated correctly . Sounds like it is over heating and shutting off .

Temp = 75c

I assume that's at idle which means your CPU is definitely overheating. Turn off your compuer and take the CPU heatsink off. Clean it, apply new thermal paste and make sure to properly attatch it to the CPU.

That doesn't matter right now . Your CPU is shutting down because you do not have the HSF on properly .

I know the stock heatsinks have clips and they tend to not click down onto the motherboard well. make sure its mounts good

Still seems high but its idling at 43c at 20min up time

That's because it is being cooled by a stock heatsink. A good aftermarket heatsink should drop your temps about 10'c on idle.

Not at all. There's a ton of parts for water cooling i7's.. probablly more than other sockets. If you want to start simple, look at a Corsair H70. If you want to get more complicated and put it together yourself, have a look at this kit: http://www.xspc.biz/rasa750rs240kit.php

Words of wisdom not very wise..

All default Intel BIOS' have a fail-safe shutdown if it hits 99C...

And while 75C is definitely hot and resulting from a misplaced heatsink, that's not horribly bad for an i7 processor.
85C+ is considered the warning zone.

-------

For OP, the best heatsink to get is the NH-D14, otherwise you need to go out and get a complete water cooling system.

Umm maybe not but if it is shutting down ( AND IT WAS) then I see nothing wrong with what I said ! I would get a good water cooling unit if you can OP , Just remember once you go water you will NEVER want to go back to air !

(has some old files I want and if I can use them for storage)

Any Ideas?
