Quick advice please - worth upgrading DDR4-2400 for gaming?

Hi all,

have an 8700K, 1080Ti on an ASUS prime-A board.
I bought cheapish kit of 2x8 GB ddr4 modules. When I run them at 2700 the system crashes a lot, so stuck at 2400.

I am just trying to figure out if it is worth grabbing a pair of G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600. The main reason I want too upgrade is to get better frame rates (I only play Hunt Showdown - best game ever IMHO)
Does anyone know if this would give me a real world boost in performance? Is it worth the expense? (I'd love to upgrade to a 30xx but you know...)

Neo's are optimised for AMD Zen 3's and X570 chipset. But works for you too. G.Skill Trident Z has other good and cheaper 3600MHz, like CL16-16-16-36 Samsung B-die modules too. Unless you're looking for those RGB effects...

I'm playing a lot of Hunt last 9 months.
The game cares mostly about your GPU. I don't think you will notice the faster RAM.
My i7 3770 runs almost the same as my i9 10850 with the same GPU's(1060, 580, 3070) even though the i9's RAM is way faster(1600 vs 3600).

I just upgraded from 2400! 3600 has been nice (albeit, I mainly notice in benchmarks). I've noticed some improved frames here and there, but nothing substantial. However, the faster RAM will facilitate things a little quicker, though, so I'd still go for it once you identify what's causing your crashes (if it makes sense at that point), especially if you're going to be using that particular kit/speed for a few years.

One theoretical question before you upgrade: does your motherboard and CPU's memory controller support such speeds? If so, an upgrade might be worth it, if you can get the new kit cheap. RAM speed upgrade isn't worth it for gaming 99% of the time.

Another question: what graphics card do you have and what resolution do you play at? The biggest observable benefits are with high-end cards (RTX 3080 and up) at 1080p resolution.

Nah I don’t think so , if what you’re looking for a boost in performance, you’ll be better off saving that money for a future upgrade.
Since your sys crashes at 2700mhz , I wouldn’t recommend to get 3600mhz until you identify what’s causing that problem... imagine getting the 3600mhz kits only to find out it crashes too ...

that's more a problem with overclocking the 2400 ram than anything else I'd think as most 2400 is already OC'd from 2133 and that's probable as far as the chips on his ram can go and still be stable

A good timing kit of 3200 or 3600 would probably be quite a bit better than what he's using now

From personal experience, Faster RAM tends to help out minimum frame rates. It can help reduce swings in frame rate due to closing the gaps between min and max. Depends on application though.

I went from 1600DDR3 to 2400DDR3 at the time.

My current system I went from 3000DDR4 to 3600DDR4 and the difference wasn't as noticeable.

Going from 2400 to 3600, I would like to think there would be improvement.

Go to your ram makers site and find a 2666 kit and set your timings and volts to that.
