please no Intel vs AMD, this is strictly about price preferred.

comments are well about segmentation at price points like why it's gets annoying or why you dislike it.

NvIdias top consumer card has (for most of that time the x80) averaged $700 (adjusted for inflation to 2017 dollars) since the year 2000.

I'm not going to answer "price preferred" because I don't bsee what preference has to do with value..... I'd prefer that i could buy another Porsche for $100.

I would like to say $350 .... as the $350 970 was ridiculous performance / price ratio ... making it the best selling card ever. But I thing $450 is an appropriate price point for what I consider a mid range card.

I was between 200 and 250, as my thought on it is what the majority of users around the world would choose based on my conversations with people outside tech forums.
Mainstream to me has nothing to do with perf/$, perf/W, cost/frame and that kind of charts.
Is what most people chooses to just get the (any) job done.

Thats how much a 3600 and a 10400 cost in my country, well the 3600 went up a bit recently but still.

Its also the max I'm willing to pay for a CPU, my 1600X cost me ~180 back in 2018 may.

He's not referring to the list...it's about the price you think a midrange CPU should be at. Taking the poll literally as the market wouldn't make sense, it's not like CPUs start at $150USD and top out at $600USD...current CPUs go quite a bit farther in both directions.

I picked $200USD; the popularity of the 10400F and 3600 are self-evident. While the "premium" options in the midrange space have gone up (5600X and 10600K) quite a bit, the actual "volume" parts like the 10400F and 3600 are right in line with their ancestors like the 3350/3570K, 4460/4690K, 8400, 9400, etc. It's the sweet spot and both Intel and AMD know this.

Barring other unexplained price increases that have been present in lower and higher end CPUs, even with the state of the economy right now in Canada, these two midrange CPUs are actually selling for pretty close to that mark in their USD equivalent - right on the money.

I voted 250 as today you can really see performance improvements by spending about that vs 4 or 5 year old parts.

Hi fellow Canuck!!! The reason they are like that is because they are the best CPUs for the price period. Especially when you look at the Canadian market. We can only lament on CPUs like the 3700X because they have not come under $400 since they have been released. Even the 1700 was $100 less a year after it's launch but the 3000 series have not seen any real movement on the Canadian market. other than the 10600F and 3600. 10400AF, 3100X and 10100F are the most popular CPUs in Canada because of price. I would mention the 3300x but you can't even get that CPU anywhere.

well actually that's what it is now.
Back 10-15 years ago, I'm not sure if high end went that high, or just jump to a massive premium back then.
To me this help people not spend too much on mid-range.

Anything above the current 10400F and 3600 can only be justified by specialised needs (e.g. 4k gaming, heavy graphics/video processing, etc.), so $200 gets my vote.

For me 250 is an acceptable price for a top mid-tier cpu. I think all the i5/R5 lineup should be in the 200-250 range.

seriously, since that SKU launched in May, I have literally not seen a single instance of it in stock. The 3800X came down to $390 last week as a Prime deal, but yeah, 3700X never below $400. Which is okay for me, I paid $459 at launch so I'm perfectly fine with the pricing now lol.

On the flipside, it does make me feel a bit better buying on launch or soon after, knowing that prices aren't coming down anyways. Bad news for the people who both want a higher end SKU but want to save money, but soothes my damaged ego and eviscerated wallet :laugh:

hoping to snag a 5900X on the 5th; I wake up at midnight anyways.

If Joe makes $25K/year, has two kids, $100 in the bank, and a puddle of transmission fluid under his car, his answer is likely to be different from Sam who makes $50K per year, has no kids, $250,000 in his 401K, nice new car in the driveway and a Harley in the garage.

And Chris, who is an avid gamer, is likely to give a different answer from Dana, who is an Internet "influencer".

Thanks I have a friend that works at Canada Computers so it was good when it launched. The fact of the matter is that once you get into the 3700X you are getting into serious computing power. I did see that deal but I was whelmed. The value is in the performance and growth of mind share.

There is nothing wrong with getting launch AM4 CPUs right around availability. The 5900X does look like a beast but I want a 5600X for my Gaming rig. I hope it is $349 which is not bad for a CPU that gives the purported performance but I have a build request in process that will allow me to mitigate the cost by using my 3600 as a base. I look forward to using the Corsair 4000D Airflow which seems to be quite the case for $109.99 Canadian.

Platforms have evolved. Main stream platforms used to be just in the mid range, and other platforms have become more workstations than high-end.

Midrange cpus should be priced at whatever people are willing to spend on them what I think they should cost is irrelevant......

That being said both Intel/AMD would be foolish to not have decently performing $200 ish parts that could be considered part of the midrange.

It should or shouldn't cost I target a specific performance level and see what the going rate is for that level of performance. I plan on picking up an $800 cpu strictly because its what I want. If it was a midrange cpu I couldn't care less as long as it offers the performance level I'm after.
