Why do people almost always buy 850 evo and 970 evo for the same computer?

nvme for OS,sata for games.
doesn't matter much tbh, you'd get the same perceptible performance running both off the same sata ssd.nvme is placebo for home users only thing it really does faster is moving files.it saves physical space in your pc too.

Gotcha, ty for the info, as far as I know, sata is slower than NVMe, so why would nvme be for OS and sata for games :-?

Because NVMe drives are actually faster and it's noticeable for the OS and for certain programs. I have a second NVMe drive for games, as well as an older SATA drive for games.

m.2/sata is cheaper and nmve doesn't increase FPS only load time

for me i use nvme for the games i usually play frequently and sata for game archived.

I personally have two NVME drives and a SATA SSD. One NVME is for the OS, the other is for my games. The SATA SSD is where I offload my Documents, Pictures, Video, and Download folders to. This way if my OS were to crash, I wouldnt lose anything in those folders as they are stored on a separate drive.

Thx for the answers, may I ask, what's a good pc software to check the speed and health of a storage drive?
CrystalDiskInfo for health and CrystalDiskMark for speed.

look up youtube videos, take the crappiest sata ssd and the best nvme and the differences in load times are within a couple percent.
nvme can handle more iops so it's better for system theoretically, but like I said,a home user will find it hard to notice any difference.

did you set up overprovisioning ?

What is overprovisioning?
unused space

SSD overprovisioning can increase the endurance of a solid state drive by distributing the total number of writes and erases across a larger population of NAND flash blocks and pages over time. It can also improve performance by giving the flash controller additional buffer space for managing program/erase (P/E) cycles and improving the probability that a write operation will have immediate access to a pre-erased block. The extra capacity is not visible to the host as available storage.

I'm sitting in disk management but I do not know how to distribute the total number of writes and erases across a larger population of NAND flash blocks and pages over time. i don't even know what nand, blocks and pages are.

to set up overprovisioning just use shrink volume,10% is the recommended value.
it's not mandatory but it is recommended.

Too many component selections are made based upon factors of little relevance. Not just gamers either. For example ... a user wanted 3 PCs for her office and she did the research and based her component selection based upon performance in office suite performance. Now these office suite benchmarks generally consist of a script which times the peformance in a series of office app operations. Each of these operations require user input in between each operation. So of what relevance is the 0.054 seconds in benchmark performance when each keystoke or mouse movement eats up a minimum of 10 times that ? We also talked bout boot time and I booted a box in my office from the SSD and SSHD.... 1st time we just watched and both seemed same ... 2nd time I asked her to use here stopwatch app on her phone ... the two boots were 0.9 seconds apart. I told her to sleep on it a few days and let me know on Monday.

But I also asked her to observe each employee's activity as they arrived. Generally the 1st thing they all did was turn on their PC. Things they did before they touched the KB included making / getting cofee, listening to their phone messages and returning calls, looking at mail, hitting the bathroom. She called asking ... could we eliminate the SSDs for now and put them in later ? So we built the boxes w/ no SSDs and put the OS on a small partition on the SSHD... Few month later wanted to add photo and video editing and said it was time to add the SSDs. What we wound up doing is adding two SSDS to one box (1st for OS and programs, 2nd as a scratch drive) and a GFX card. Added a 2nd SSHD to the PC and moved all the data files from all PCs to that new drive. Mapped it to F:\ on all PCs so they could all there *F*iles there. Last thing we did was add a HD Docking Station ... for off site storage. My son just built himself a new box.... his pre-play routine runs from 25 seconds to 5 minutes ... from hit log-in button (puter on 24/7) take headset off charger, remove USB dingle thingie from storage cubby, close cubby, insert USB to... to adding grabbing a snack, cooking, feeding the cats. I have 2 SSDs in my build ... I also don't really see any real world gain, but being geekish, I just like knowing it's there is "needed"

If ya remember the kid in HS that when ya pulled up to the light, he'd rev the engine ... when light turned he'd blast off the line so to speak and then you'd be along side him again at the next light .... and you'd pull into the school parking lot right behind him.... and you'd be standing right behind him handing your tickets in for the spring dance. He had the faster care, but what did he gain besides bragging rights ? The geek and all of us wants the fastest components possible under their budgets ... but it's worthwhile determining just what that impact is the real world ... if the money is there, by all means grab it, But if it's forcing a compromise in another component, say dropping from a Z / X series to H / B series, then stop and think.

so why would nvme be for OS and sata for games :-?
if you are running a newer Motherboard, its thought running the OS on a NvMe allows the system to perform as fast as technology (or your wallet) will allow.
i recently switched my OS from a 850Evo to a 970Evo, i havent noticed any significant changes outside of file transfers. im certain there IS a difference, just not noticeable in most applications.

on the same topic, but separate from this matter, i have always wondered, why are 850 EVO's more expensive than the newer variants? its weird. its been like that for years

exactly.
depends on your testing methodology.
nvme has perks such as saving space and blazing fast sequential speeds,on the other hand it costs more, doesn't really show any noticeable benefit for a home user and tends to run way hotter than sata ssds.

I'd much, much rather replace my spinners with sata ssds than chase pcie 4.0 speeds on nvme. And it's what every home user should do as well.

I have 860 evo 500 and it's still able to maintain 300mb/s when almost full.not the best, but still way more than qlc.m9pey on pci-e with 64l bics is actually about the same,850 pro's do about 240mb/s,adata's drives are pure shit when it comes to nand speed alone, both tlc and mlc can drop below 100mb/s cause they're using micron's tlc (avoid).they do,however, feature very efficient caching.if you don't fill them up to the max they'll be as fast as samsungs at lower price.

Recently i replaced my hdds to new ones with 256MB cache and while copying data onto them they were writing at 180MB/s sometimes topping at 200+ MB/s so QLC is worse than decent hdd.
