Yea, confusing title I know, but that seems to be the way things are going. The Inquirer is reporting that NVIDIA will take the performance crown with the 7800 GTX, and in SLI even dominate the CrossFire X850XT's. After this, they say ATI will release the R520 regaining their performance crown. I think most of us pretty much knew this, however here's where the twist comes in. NVIDA will release their 'reserved' 7800 Ultra, which will more than likely be an overclocked 7800 GTX that retakes their lead. Yields on a card like this should actually be decent, however it's upcoming combatant may not be as lucky. Last in this graphics card food chain is said to be a new card based on the R520 with speed improved enough to surpass even the 7800 Ultra. However, with these most likely insane speeds on a new 90nm process, yeilds should be less than great, making this card more of a figurehead than anything actually obtainable, atleast for the early part of the product cycle. Once again, like all things yet to be released, I'm sure we'll all know once the official announcements are made, and until then we can just gossip.

And hopefully we can sit back and watch the prices of the 6800's and X850's drop. :D

the gtx will be out first and is less powerful than the ultra. unless you're doing in ways of superiority

The scores in the latest 7800 benchmarks are so underwhelming, it gets about 7,800 marks in 3dMark05 (I'm not kidding), even with an OC'ed FX-57! The SLI version gets about 13,000 marks... I know the numbers sound impressive, but there're rumors about a certain video card manufacturer getting about 10,000 marks from a single R520...
Don't expect a leap in performance from the 6800 to the 7800 to be as huge as the leap that happened when nVidia went from the 5950 to the 6800...

Check this link for benchmarks and SLI pictures!

I'd like to know who could afford 2 R520's or 2 7800Ultra's. I'm lucky if I could afford one. :( But its great cause as long as the keep throwing new cards out, the others will drop in price and they will still give great performance.

i was under the impression that the ultra is no more they r replacing it with the name GTX as far as i could see on the web this is whats being done. the 7800 ultra is the 7800 GTX unless ive read wrong but i dont think so.

http://www.techspot.com/story17737.html

While we are on the subject of the Computex trade show, it seems that the next-generation graphics processor from NVIDIA has also been spotted at the event. The 7800 series is expected to be announced by NVIDIA during the next few days. One quick bit of information that is readily available is that the high end models will not carry the "Ultra" name any longer, and will instead use the add-on "GTX". There will also be a basic 7800 model, as well as a "GT" model.

i think that says it all :) i dont like it though i liked ultra its known and is reliable wont be getting it anyway to expensive

Ya you have to think...is the extra performance worth the $$$. You wont it but tis just not worth it.

Nvidia needs to stick with a fucking name scheme.
They used something similar before, the Geforce 2 GTS

Dont get it now,if you wait a few months nVidia will come out with the 7800Ultra and then the GTX will drop in price :)

I agree, it already is rapidly dropping in price from the original MSRP of $649 to $599, then to $549, and the inquirer mentioned a store in the UK that sells the gtx for $504! :eek:

There is no ultra anymore the GTX is the ultra they r making a slower version of the 7800 GTX probably call it GTO or somthing the only thing they can do is make a new card now 8500 or somthing god knows what they will think of. And they r worth every penny my friend has a dual core X2 4200 2gb corsair Expert dual channel and a 7800 GTx he is buying another at christmas the technology on it alone is amazing shader 3.0 these r the things needed to play future games like stalker and so on. When i say play it i mean play it right if i had the money id get it to but not yet saving saving for it www.overclockers.co.uk they have it at a good price

ohh btw on cs source with full detail on and 1024 resolution the 7800GTx on cs_aztec which is the hardest on graphics oh his system at the bridge shooting the water the lowest we could get it was 139 FPS no card will come near that 50 to 60 FPS for a A6800 Ultra 20 FPS on a 5950 ultra its a amazing card

According to most hardware websites, nVidia is preparing an Ultra version of the 7800,

Once ATI reveals the R520, Nvidia won't have any other choice than to release a faster clocked version of G70, Geforce 7800 possibly known as Ultra. We learned that this chip will still be based on 110 nanometres as Nvidia is not ready to jump to the 90 naometre yet.

Source

It's rumored that it might be a faster GPU than Ati's R520, but that remains to be seem, now that Ati has taped out that core for a third time, and is getting over 600 Mhz according to some reports:

We already said that R520 is to work at more than 600MHz but we believe this number is going to go even higher.

We strongly believe that ATI doesn’t have any other choice than to go for a hard launch and, if that happens, you won’t see any Fudo R520s before September. This will give Nvidia a pure lead of two and a half months before ATI reshapes and releases its new cards.

Don’t forget that Nvidia has a G70 Ultra up its sleeve, but this is still to come.

Source

Oh, and btw, the card you're referring to is to be known as the 7800 GT, a lower clocked version of the GTX, that'll have only 20 pipelines enabled:

VR-Zone has learned that the upcoming GeForce 7800 GT will be 20 pipes instead of 24 pipes as intially reported. The vertex shader could probably stay at 8 and ROP at 16. The core clock for 7800GT is 400MHz instead of 335MHz initially thought.

I have a 7800 gtx and it plays battlefield 2 on high with plenty of performance to spare.
I agree, its not a huge jump from a 6800 ultra, but it is still nice.
my personal scores on 3d mark 05
OC'd 6800 gt----> 5300

stock 7800 gtx-----> 8200

The card is worth the money (though i won mine for winning a lan)
hope that helps.

Not a knock on Nvidia ... but the Crossfire is more appealing to me because I don't have to rely on someone writing drivers for the game in order for me to use the $$$ I put into dual cards ...

so i see thats weird when at first they said they r scraping the name ultra ATI it seems is putting serious pressure on them then with there new developments 600 mhz and more awell good for gaming and push prices down. problem is the technology going in to new games like stalker and half life 2 aftermath to play optimally u need the tech like shader 3 and so on. When u look at that and then after that it seems to play the new games right ur upgrading so much now adays just to play current and future games with optimal specs in other words the A6800 ultra is not gonna be in my opinion able to keep up with the new games never mind the rest. The peeps at stalker said its for the hardware enthusuiasts i hope it doesnt end up like boiling point with horrible loads and crashing every so often. It just feels like in todays age of graphics cards to play games right we need to splash out 500 pounds every time they bring a new 1 out or else u have to start using lower settings were as before u didnt really have that problem u got to appreciate what u had for a while. only 2 months of saving left till a whole new rig thank god hehe.

i heard crossfire isnt as good as sli but its cheaper which is good but only ATI i believe have the boards that support it thats the last i heard on crossfire as for sli well if u have the cash go for it. Buy 1 7800GTX or Ultra when its out now and buy another at Christmas when is half the price
