Performance aside, the Core 2 series are lacking some modern SSE instructions and a variety of games crash, or outright refuse to start - so please keep in mind games that exist now may refuse to run, let alone future titles.

There is a whole range of GPUs you can choose from that will max out that CPU's capabilities, it really comes down to what prices you can get, and how good your PSU/case cooling is - a 780, 960 or 1050 on the Nv side would all give great gaming performance, but the newer they get the less wattage they need

Certain games would need file hacks and parameter adjustments to run, example is cod4 on an athlon xp.

no mans sky was an example of a game that failed on AMD AM3/intel core 2 series CPUS, but those people actually had a blessing in disguise.

Just wanted the OP to be aware that a CPU upgrade will be in his future soon enough, since he was looking at vulkan/DX12 games - bleeding edge engines will likely drop older CPU's first

Of course gtx 780 ti is out of the question when it comes to DX11 performance but what I want to say that R9 280x when it's released it was an equlavent to the gtx 770 and now it's competing with 780/780ti so I was asking if it would be a more future proof than 1050 ti when dxr obsessing over something thats wishful thinking and something that might not be the norm (not a good strategy when trying to future proof something, especially when referring to outdated hardware on both your CPU an12 becomes the standard.
It's only competing with the 780ti on a very few AMD favored games (780ti is overall the better card).

Your basically obsessing over a 6 year old card on the assumption that DX12 even becomes standard (which isn't guaranteed) and under the assumption that DX12 will become standard before both your CPU and GPU become obsolete.

Save every penny you can collect and wait for the impending crypto-crash. It will be raining I3's, I5's, Ryzen hexacores, and GPUs for cheap! However, who knows how much longer they'll live without proper care.

This is true, here's an updated review of 780ti and 290x done in 2016 that shows they still trade blows beating each other out in some titles and losing on others but are still fairly close in terms of overall performance. It's hard to recommend anyone buying a used 290x as the prices are so inflated £180+ on ebay. I managed to pick up a 780 ti for £120 a couple of months ago which is a decent deal considering the used market prices these days.

I'm not sure what country you're from which actually makes giving an answer harder..
But anyways..
If you can afford a R9280x or a 1050ti that means you should be able to pick up a refurbished, second hand etc... 2nd or 3rd generation Intel "Core I5" series which will give you full benefits of your existing rx460....along with 8gb ddr3
The GPU's you mentioned are not going to benefit your system any more than what you have.

DX12 has features level 11_1, 12_0 and 12_1. GCN 1.0 is utilizing DX12, fl 11_1 and what I've read that these features lvl are not meant for the players but the developers.
No, GCN cards launched with FL 11.1 but they were retroactively updated to support 12.0. Developers target a specific feature level and most still target 11.1.

GTX 780 Ti was also FL 11.1 and retroactively updated to support 12.0. This is a moot point when comparing the two.

The most important thing is going to be the price you can get them for.

Thanks guys for enlightening me. Obviously my understanding of the matter was minor! I have given up on the idea of buying the R9 280x forever because of its age, its power consumption and especially that the seller is advertising gpu risers. This says a lot.

As for the RX 460 and why I want to replace it while that step seems to be useless under the current platform; I'm actually have a compatability issue running the RX 460 [UEFI only] with the Asus p5q-e [Legacy BIOS] my bios was choppy and laggy and windows takes ages to boot up) but once It boots up everything is working fine. I also have tested it on another old asus AMD board and it's got the same problem while working perfectly on my friend's asrock z97! So I decided to sell it and I managed to sell it two days ago for 170$ to a noobish minner who went crazy after watching it hit 13.5mh/s eth (I unlocked it and modded its timings)

Then I had two choices.. Gtx 770 and 960 both 4gb and for the same price 160$ while gtx 1050 ti is flying in the sky with 250$ (used) so I went for the gigabyte gtx 960. It performs similarly to the gtx 1050 ti and consumes less power than the GTX 770. It's really in a good condition and I'm happy with it.
I'm not sure what country you're from which actually makes giving an answer harder..
It's Egypt where there's a financial crisis after floating the exchange rate. A few months ago 1$=7EGP, now it's 19EGP! Whatever money you have, it have been cut-down by more than the half, the hardware market is insane and completely a mess so upgrading the entire platform now is a waste of money and would give a miserable price-performance ratio, that's why I'm trying to give that old rig the kiss of life. I agree with the guys here, I should upgrade the whole system instead of the gpu but maybe after a couple of years when the economic conditions stabilize.

Hi.
I got a NV 780Ti and can't complain though I don't' play all the modern games. I bought that around 2 years ago if I remember correctly or 1 year ago. I think it was 1 year ago well more less. It's not that bad but sometimes it chokes. I moved from 480 than grabbed 670( burned after 2 weeks, bummer really). I'd really suggest you don't buy anything new. The prices are sky rocking at this moment. My 780ti purchase was to wait for newer cards release. Now I just wait god knows for what. :)
The thing is that the 780TI heat up a bit and can be bit loud but if this doesn't bother you it's a good card to wait for better days for any gamer.

Rubbish, you can easily use GTX 980 or GTX 1060 on it. Or RX480/RX580 for that matter if you manage to get it for a normal price.

That's the point of the thread, dude! Although R9 280x obviously is a weaker card compared to the gtx 780 ti except it managed to compete and even outperformed it in the DX12 titles! I was asking about the fasaiblty of buying an R9 280x which is cheaper and have the upper hand in the DX12 territory. Guys here have proved the invalidity of my argument. That's it! But yeah theoretically the R9 280x is a better card than the gtx 780 ti when it comes to DX12

Doom is Vulkan/OpenGL, not Direct3D
Right, but that bench isn't about doom only, it shows four other games based on dx12.. Open the link or just use the slider.

@Malik Sajid
I'm saying a faster card than GTX 1050Ti can be used even on such older processor. After all, it's still a quad core at 4.3 GHz which makes it perfectly sufficient.
I agree, as I said before it still got some life. This video shows that Q9650 @4.2GHz can utilitze a GTX 1070 by 75%, 100% in some cases and I think that 80% of gtx 1070 is a decent ratio for a 10 years old chip :D

The risk of failure is more on R9 side, but if u like it that much for Vulkan/Mantle, get it
