Its the fookN mining craze that is part of the problem with availability... ;)

2 290s do not cost less than a single 780ti even before the mining craze and inflated pricing we see today. MSRP on that card is $400 for reference models and $700 for the 780ti.

I am not sure what your point is free, why are you going on about BF3? BF4 is out and that is what we were talking about. I mentioned earlier that BF3 scales with the amount of vram, I would be curious to see if that still happen with BF4.

Also it is Mantle, and it has been delayed in BF4 (the first game it was going in to). Until games patch themselves to support Mantle it wont make a damn bit of difference. Here is to hoping there is a lot of support if it actually does want

Yes the 780ti on its own defeats the 290 card with its limited 3 gb of memory,
But you crossfire 2 290 cards with 4 gig of memory that costs less than a single 780ti card it will have it for breakfast and be 60% to 70% faster maybe even more when mantel is up and running.

I wouldn't bother posting things like that from YT. I see the fps it is registering but to me the scene is far from fluid. Not saying it wasn't smooth but as far as playback from YT - even with nice fast broadband, it's choppy. :(

You have to see what i see because here the 780ti cost more or the same as 2 290 cards
Pics below show what im saying

It depends where you shop. Scan has £515 for cheapest 780Ti, their cheapest 290 is £314 (not in stock).

All that being said, we're splitting hairs. Of course, 2 290's are far better value than a single 780Ti. No arguments there.

290 crossfire performance vid, Large vids will require a good connection

max mem used on both these 2560x1600 vids was 8150 in msi thats little over 4 gig per card.
This is why i passed on the 780 ti and the fact they cost me 600 for both and thats the same as a single custom 780ti.
So if you own a 290 feel good about yourself and laugh at those with 3gb :)

The ref cooler is not bad it cools the GPU and the VRMS well. I am using 2 x290x to mine with and the temps stay around 63- 70C depending on the ambient temp of my room.

I am undervolting -37v and using an 860MHz core clock. 825Kh/s per card. Fans stays about 63% on cold days and 75% on hot dec days in Texass.

When gaming I really dont even OC much 1050/1350 +25v and I get 100fps vsync @ 1440p with Ultra settings. GPU VRMS cool as can be with not much blower sounds.

Can you post up with and afterburner grab (or similar) showing that being used? I thought it was impossible for a Vram demand to actually exceed the video memory of your gfx card?

I will do that,
Msi afterburner seems to look at the memory as a hole and not consider its being mirrored as you would expect,
If it says 4 gig it actually using 2 gig per card.

The bottom pic is memory swapping but im using 2560x1600 all ultra and 200% res scale on bf4,
The picture above its on 180% res scale all ultra 2560x1600, So to max bf4 out on a 2.5k display you need more than 4 gig but to be honest 170% to 200% they look no different.

Finally got my card in, ordered on Black Friday. Glad I ordered that early, when I logged into the retailer product page for instructions to claim my BF4 key, I saw that the price has gone up $90 on the XFX model.

At first I didn't see what all the fuss was about regarding thew stock cooler, it was running nice and quiet during install. Then I cranked it up via Afterburner, and HOLY HELL was it loud. Definately getting a waterblock for this bad boy.
Been drinking all day so no benches or anything yet. Haven't even overclocked it yet.

EDIT Played some games and have some mad coil whine going on. Is this something that will go away with time, or do I need to think about getting an RMA?

No coil whine here but even so i wouldn`t worry about it,
It will never go away but it will not effect the life of the card.

Sad to hear. I'm sure W1zzard mentioned his sample had none. If you put it under water it'll sound worse.
Both my 7970's had coil whine, i sent one back for RMA but the replacement had it too. You could RMA it but there is no guarantee you'll be whine free. Only way to reduce chance of whine is a custom pcb with solid chokes.

Just change your voltage settings for the vcore that should fix it. It might be that XFX switched to cheaper coils than the reference and they might all whine or your PSU puts a load voltage that causes the resonance so even an RMA won't change it.
I finally put in my order for a pair of R9 290 Tri-X cards and they cost just under the price of a custom GTX 780 Ti because here in the CZ price inflation has been 0% since the LTC craze the only problem is that there are almost no cards in stock so I waited until the custom ones got listed. Once I get them I plan to add more caps to one of them because the stock VRM is capable of some serious current but the voltage ripple must be in the 20+mv area because the card only has 5 phases(less phases = more ripple) and 15nH inductors(less inductance = more ripple) with an average sized capacitor bank. So I'm guessing that OCing is limited by the amount of ripple these cards have and doubling the amount of caps could make major improvements in lowering ripple and increasing OCability.

I'll give it a go and see what happens.
EDIT Just checked, and Afterburner doesn't seem to have voltage control for the 290/X yet.
There's a beta out, but it seems to not work for XFX or other vendors who use their own custom bios.

No coil hiss from my 2x 290x. I would not think any AIB would replace a lower grade reference part from an entire PCB when all they do is degrade said capabilty from the flag ship to generate the lesser more affordable reference GPU in the same line of product.

I dont think so either. I had said before that my reference XFX model uses CPL chokes just like the AMD ref. Infact the only diff I noticed with my personal card is unlike AMDs ref that uses hynix chips mine use elpida.

Think I killed My card.

Plugged in my HUE light string.

End of string, with open pin holes, touched the back of video card and screen went blank.

Tried resetting, reseating, nothing is Working so far. To be expected really. Things been going this way lately.

Anyone have a miracle solution?

Know I'm really stupid, but thing is I would have got a back plate when I got water block, but not in stock.

Think I killed My card.

Plugged in my HUE light string.

End of string, with open pin holes, touched the back of video card and screen went blank.

Their is a fuse at the rear of the card you can check. its a long shot but if it is just the fuse you can arc over it or replace it by sourcing the part.

let me upload the pic I took of mine earlier.

Ok, got a picture of that end of my card. How do I tell if it's the fuse?
