While we all wait for Vega to become more available and cheaper (and those of you who were lucky enough to get RX 480/580 cards before the whole Crypto-currency fad..)
I would like to see where we previous high-end generation AMD card owners sit in terms of performance and latest drivers stability/performance.

Throw up some benchmarks, average FPS in games, what drivers you are using and any problems you are experiencing. (I will post some screenshots of benchmark scores in the following days. It has been a while since I have benchmarked with the latest drivers and my stable max clock speeds.)

For example:
I have a R9 290. Stable gaming clocks of 1050 core / 1375mhz mem. (I can push it much further than this and I will when I go to benchmark, but power consumption and temps become a concern during long periods of gaming.)
I am running 18.3.2 beta drivers.
1440p resolution monitor.
Main games I have been playing lately are Dishonored 2 (Death of the Outsider and the base game, Death of the Outsider seems to run better than the base game for some reason...), Wolfenstein 2, The Evil Within 2 and GTA 5.

-Dishonored 2 average FPS: 45~ with everything maxed except for texture size is at Very High instead of Ultra.. My card only has 4gb of memory and I have seen in these newer titles, they use much more than that at 1440p with anti-aliasing enabled.

-Evil Within 2 average FPS: 42~ with everything maxed except for textures again. The Void engine that Dishonored uses and the Stem engine that this game uses are very similar and based off of IdTech 5/6, which highly favors Nvidia cards for whatever reason...(other than DOOM and Wolfenstein 2 that use IdTech 6 and Vulkan API)

-Wolfenstein 2 average FPS: 55~ with everything maxed except for textures and shadow quality (1 less lower setting) Vulkan API favors AMD graphics.

-GTA 5 average FPS: 50~ with very specific settings... "High" grass level (goes to very high > Ultra) Normal postFX with no motion blur enabled. No anti-aliasing at all. I know this is an older game and not the best for benchmarking, but it still holds up graphically. However, this is the only game I get artifacts in if I raise my core clock above 1050mhz no matter what. Extra Voltage doesn't help, and the game will eventually crash if I run the card memory at 1500mhz (which is what the Hynx memory is rated at, and I have NO problem running it at 1500mhz mem for ANY other game.)

I have a LOT of other games (124) in my Steam library that I can benchmark if you do not play these games above.
I should have 3Dmark and Heaven benchmarks up in the next few days.

Discovered that lowering the in-game resolution from 1440p to 1920x1200 shows a HUGE fps increase in Dishonored 2 Death of the Outsider. Getting a solid 65~FPS!!! Does not look bad either! Going to try this with The Evil Within 2 now...

290/X are ~ 1060/ti, not bad for an old card, to get a 1060 would be a foolish sidegrade...

Instead of a new GPU, you might be better off (if possible to sell your current monitor) getting a monitor that has freesync, like the 24" VA Acer Curved 144hz 1080p. often on sale for $179, it would... well enhance your gaming experience a lot. and make your 290 last another year or two until the hole gpu market sorts itself out (and it will, we just have to be patient)

Rx 480 8gb and R9 390x 8gb owner here, pleased with performance from both cards considering prices for new cards. I'd really like a Vega 56 8gb but with prices and availability what they are I will stay with these 2 cards in my 2 pc's

Benchmark Scores @_@
I went from a gtx 970 to a 580 (Sapphire Nitro+ Special Edition in specs) out of necessity, but I’ve come to really enjoy this card.

It clocks pretty decently, I like the AMD drivers vs the issues I had with the nv drivers over the years, and it’s performance is pretty good for my 1080p use. I really wanted a Vega56, but prices and availability even in December weren’t where I’d have liked.

Only issue I have is the core clock sometimes sticks at full, but I have a thread on tpu that’s full of good workarounds.

I’ll probably stick with this card through to this December at least, but I’d like to stick with AMD for my next upgrade cycle too.

Satisfied MSI RX 480 owner here. Been running flawlessly in this Dell T3500 workstation since December 2016.

Here are a couple screen shots of GPU-Z. Both after doing exact same run in Doom 2016 with all settings on ultra at 1280x720. Same 19c ambient room temp.

Crimson 16.12.1 driver in Windows 7. Max GPU power draw = 187w. Max GPU temp = 75c.

Same system three months later.

Adrenalin 18.1.1 driver in Windows 10. Max GPU power draw = 139w. Max GPU temp = 69c.

Loving Radeon chill on both the 480 and 390x, keeps temp under 75C on both cards

After several months my card temps kept creeping higher and higher. To the point it was thermal throttling. Did some disassembly and discovered the thermal paste, probably put there by a robot on an assembly line, was applied very poorly. Did not cover the entire chip and was thicker than a Dime in some spots.

I own an ASUS R9 290X that I replaced with a MSI 980ti Golden Edition about a year and a half ago. Due to the currently inflated GPU prices, mainly because of the Bitcoin BS, I decided to sell off the 980ti and reinstall my R9 290X.

R9 290X
W10-64 Pro
Adrenalin Edition 18.3.4
Release Date 3/26/18

Even though the 980ti was a bit faster and cooler, I always really liked the performance I got from the 290X and never had an issue with it for the the time I used it. Now that I've installed it back in, I have run into a problem with what seems to be a driver issue.

The last drivers I used were 17.x.x something, can't really remember exactly. When I booted it up, windows opened fine, the device manager detected the Radaon card and drivers last used. I then went to the AMD site and updated to the most current drivers (Adrenalin Edition 18.3.4 Optional, release date 3/26/18) and installed with no problems.

After restarting, the computer would boot into (Win 10 Pro) fine, but after approx 10-15 seconds it would go to black screen. Only way to get out would be to do a forced shut down. After several more tries I would get the same thing.

I removed the 290X and inserted an old EH4870 I had and was able to boot back up into windows with none of the previous issues and then remove the updated drivers I had installed. I then switched cards back to the 290X but kept getting the same problem with going to black screen after loading into Windows.

I then tested the 290X in my wife's PC and was able to load (Win 7 Pro) with no issues, card was running in there ok, but no AMD drivers installed.

But, my problem now is, I'm very unsure what drivers to try and install for the 290X as to not repeat the same issues that occured in my PC.

I have a list of AMD drivers from the most current to as far back as 2016....see below.

https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Windows 7 - 64

Has anyone had any issues with the most recent AMD drivers ?.....Any suggestions on which previous ones to use ?

I have had this problem before actually. You need to clear off ALL the Nvidia software from your computer, then perform a clean install of the new AMD drivers. (choose clean install when updating..)
If you still have remaining Nvidia video card drivers and older AMD drivers on the same system, they will conflict 9 times out of 10.
