meh, just need to smooth out those scratches!

use around a 600 grit first, wet with some kind of alcohol or rubbing spirit. Then jump to 800, again wet! Keep lapping in the same direction ( side to side or up and down)

Then when starting to look shiny and smooth go into 1200 grit dry. maintaining the same direction.

make sure to flip the heat sink around so pressure is from another angle tho.

myself wouldnt worry about filling the gaps with solder or whatever, just lap that baby good. ive seen many heatsinks or cpus with massive divots and never needed to fill the gaps!

All I can say is it's 100% better than it was. Made sure to rub AS5 onto the block to fill in the microgaps.

That one big divot wasn't completely gone, my fear was taking too much off and having to shave off the mounting studs.

Over the course of a day, idle temps dropped from 48c to 38c while the AS5 set in.

NH Ambient can't be all that high? 38*C is pretty high. My VGA at idle is 24*C. Think it can drop any more?

Ambient is about 20c. I'll be playing around with it more this evening.

Also now shopping for aftermarket solutions  The card works great, but damn is it loud!

i just think how about you put aluminum sheet on that
just cut it square and put thermalpaste then put it back

Which one?

water cool the bastard get a H60 and work up a zip-tie mounting device
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181030
just make sure you get a small 56mm or 80mm fan to point over the vrm
you do not wanna use layers or shims thats gonna hurt the temps more then having the gap filled with thermal paste
or get this solution from our buddys at nzxt
https://www.nzxt.com/product/detail/138-kraken-g10-gpu-bracket.html

I'm looking at this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2...uid_Cooling_Block_-_Copper_Acrylic_23580.html

Or this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2...ng_Block_-_Acetal_EK-FC_R9-290X_-_Acetal.html

I'm a fan of EK, but really like the Aquacomputer after watching the install video.

If the MK-26 will fit, that's the current one to use, I am using a MK-13 because my power connectors on the 770 are stacked and block the fins of longer sinks, this one is fatter and shorter profile, while the 26 is longer and thinner profile. It bends the card so water-cooling it might be a smarter move if you are willing to spend $$$.

Edit: I see the rest of the system is watercooled, so you might as well go with a waterblock.

I'm seriously considering that route. The loop and case with support it. My coolant temperature stayed around 78F after playing 2 hours of FarCry 3, with the 3570k at 4.7 Ghz.

Now to decide which one, and figure out what I need for fittings and all that... it is a PITA, but this rig will be in place for a few years I think.

Can't help you there but that Hawaiian motif is really stylish on the aqua computer.

Cool video:

Personally, I'd look at the Artic Cooling AIO coolers as a cooler replacement, unless you have a pre-exisiting cooling loop.

Dave, take a look at my specs. H20 is very much an option, and now that I have a card that will last a few years, I'm leaning in that direction...

You could do GPU-only loop. That's easier for maintenance, anyway. That CPU doesn't need much in the way of cooling..200-225W cooler is more than enough.

But that VGA...oh my these high-end VGAs really like being water-cooled. If you're gonna stick with a config for a while, I'd go full-cover, for sure.:peace:

I'd rather do it all with the current loop. I wrote before that the coolant was only reaching 78F (ambient about 70F) after playing FC3 for 2 hours, so I've definitely got some headroom. And that is with the fans on low.

Just have to decide what block to get!

I guess 38c is actually low for a stock 290x. From Wizzards 1st review of the 290x (stock):

Software Win 10 upgraded from Win 7 Pro
I like the copper look, I don't know if it would tarnish over time? If you are using colored water and care about the looks, you might want to do the nickle, it might be less contrasting.

That was my concern too, but my Koolance CPU block is copper inside and it was looking good the last time I pulled it apart.

I think the copper looks damn good too, particularly in contrast with the stainless gasket frame. Shame it'll be facing down in my case.
