R9 380 falling back...

Rarely a game is crashing on me but what puzzles me is the GPU then falls back from @x16 to @x1 mode and even after a reboot it sticks to it - the only way to get the card back into @x16 mode is power off/on (the PSU) ..

This behaviour cuts the card's performance to x1 level and looks odd to me - or is this normal?

Anyone seen a similar behaviour?

How are you checking the PCIe speed? With GPU-Z ? PCIe speed falls back to x1 when no load is introduced to the graphic card. That's a normal behavior.

Yes, I use GPU-Z for this.

Well, it's falling back to @x1 1.1 from @x16 2.0 (load) hence the lowest possible pci speed - normal behaviour is dropping back to @x16 1.1 (idle). Meanwhile I found that tying the tiny 2pin pwr plug to the 6pin plug fixed the BS issues hence GPU speed now is stable @x16
