I just installed an R9 Fury, the Sapphire Nitro version, into my system (see specs) but it's only operating at x8 rather than x16. Any ideas why it's using just 8 lanes versus the 16 which are present? Is there a way to force it over to x16?

My R9 390 was running at x16, even in its low power state - I also removed the drivers before removing my old card, so I cannot point a finger at any one thing.

EDIT: Solved, by installing and removing an old PCIe nVidea card from another slot with the Fury in slot 1.

Ok I would try to "fix" it ofcourse...
But in the end you wouldn't notice any difference with gaming on x8 or x16.

So, best bet is to just leave it alone and game my heart out? And if anyone does know a fix, I'm open to hear it.

do you have any other PCI-E devices? Is the R9 Fury installed in your first x16 lane ?

What are you using to read and confirm you're running PEG @ 8X?

Have you tried GPU-z's load test to confirm if it maxes to 8X?

Can you take a screenshot?

I have another PCIe device, an Intel I219-T1 in the lowermost PCIe x16 slot. If it's an x1 card (I think it is) I can try moving it into the x1 slot above the GPU.

And yes, I've placed the Fury into the first PCIe x16 slot.

GPU-Z, and the Radeon software as well.

Try removing the Intel I219-T1. Then is the videocard in x16?

Agreed with @Vario, confirm the card is in a fully electronic X16 PCI-e slot and possibly re-seat just to make sure all contact points are good.

Yes remove and reinsert the R9 at same time when you remove the Intel NIC.

The first SS is without the NIC in the system, the 2nd SS is with the NIC in the PCIe 0 x1 slot above the GPU.

I will go ahead and try re-seating the GPU and the NIC again as well.

Usually there are motherboard bios options relating to PCI-E speeds/lanes, might be worth a shot looking in your bios and seeing if theres a setting you need to enable.

Okay, SS4 is after a reseat, no NIC, SS5 is with the NIC and an HD 7700 just tossed in on a hunch. Having the 2nd card in the rig put the Fury @ x16 - I'm going to pull the 7700 and see if the Fury stays at x16.

Yes but it is still X16 @ 2.0 PEG specs and not 3.0 as detected, I wonder if you have something goofy going on with power saving between your firmware and OS.

It's an AMD FX system, I only have 2.0 until I buy a new Ryzen system, coz god forbid AMD could have updated their 900 chipset, rather than rebadge it.

I am unable to locate them in my EFI.

And, I pulled the 7700 out and the Fury was kicked back to x8 again! I am going to try putting my NIC into the 2nd PCIe x16 slot and see if that doesn't do something.

I've disabled Link State Power Management in the advanced options in Windows and rebooted, it the Fury was still x8.

I had the same issue a few years back.. What fixed it was a fresh mobo BIOS flash.. Weird I know but that's all it took ;)

I just updated mine to the latest, circa 2014, but no dice. Also, NIC in PCIe x16 slot 2 has left the Fury at x8 still. I will reseat the card once more.

To clarify, I've been doing a reseat as follows: Power down, remove power, remove card, turn system on, let system complain loudly about no video output, power off, remove power, reinstall GPU.

No power down, turn or unplug the PSU and press the start button to take any charge out of the system.. Remove card, use a lint free rag with some rubbing alcohol and lightly clean the pci-e gold fingers off.. Let dry a few seconds and put the card back in.. Power up and cross you fingers it works.

Card reader cleaning cards are another way to clean PCIe slots/DIMM slots with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the felt side.

Have you tried putting the fury in a different PCI slot? I'm not saying that it's an optimal position but give it a shot by itself in a different PCI3 slot, with no other devices installed in PCI slots

I disnt see this posted so far in the thread, I apologize if you already tried it
