so DVI is all good :) thanks for clearing that up for me Zubasa,

ive been messing with Rivatuner as nico suggested, and i have the core clock at 820mhz, and memory clock at 930mhz , i ran cod4 with fraps again and my average FPS is 86 ,

so after a few tweaks in riva i went from 45 avg to 86 avg :D

does that sound right ?

To me it sounds right.

Looks like its the ATi drivers mess up again. :p

On the other hand, overclocking do helps to get rid of bottlenecks in your card.
Good to see you happy with it. As I said, there is alot of potential in 4770s.
In fact, the 4770 surpasses the 4850 easily because it can clock so well.

W1z managed to get 30% OCs on his review. Most 4850 strugles to @ around 720 core and 1100 memory.

Sounds a bit crazy to me, but I wont say it's false, as long as it's working, maybe ati's wonderful powerplay *read CRAP* was having its havoc on your minimum fps switching clocks. Since using rivatuner you lock your clocks so powerplay can't downclock and upclock your card constantly...

Me = NOT happy with power play, the old 2d/3d clocks worked much better.

So I lock my card at 315gpu/500ram and 30% fan speed for normal use and more basic games, and when I hardcore game it goes to 745gpu/1050ram and 60% fan speed. Saves the electric bill and helps keep down on the heat when I'm not gaming.

To me it sounds right.

Looks like its the ATi drivers mess up again. :p

hmmm, powerplay, is that same thing as ATI drivers ?

i managed to get the mem clock to 1000mhz core still at 820, i tryed to raise the core to 850 on my first attemp but the screen went black on me, so not sure about trying that again.

ran fraps and cod4 online again and this time the FPS dropped to avg = 78.2 :twitch:

strange , is there a preffered FPS benchmarking tool ?

Your fps in the game is going to depend on a LOT.

Use 3dmark to get an idea of your performance gains.

Powerplay is the part of the card that automatically controls its clocks for various uses. It will naturally clock itself down and back up, it can do it mid game causing frame drops before it clocks itself back up too... Pretty annoying.

I dunno so much about the 4770 surpassing the 4850, it's fast, clocked it can be faster, but the 4850 clocked pretty much sends the 4770 back behind it quickly, sometimes you may need a bit of that bios voltage bump, they will take a lot!

If your experiencing FPS drops at a higher core clock then you may be overheating. Meaning you found the max you can go on your cooler. Still 78fps is pretty darn good!

The only problem with 4850 is that the average card clocks less than 10%.
It simply could not keep up to the 4770 when both are @ max oc.
Not to mention it is impossible to OC a reference 4850, the cooler barely keeps up to the heat output.

Completely untrue. Clocked to 745/1050 my 4850 with the reference cooler doesn't pass 70c at 60%, which is still perfectly acceptable noise.

The card bone stock settings will run around 100-110c, which is also perfectly safe for this card, I have ones in machines that have been running like that since the day of it's release and not a single one has failed, probably about 20 of them.

So that being said I have little doubt you couldn't pull 800/1050 maybe more with a little voltage under the reference cooler without having to overheat.

Average clocks, maybe the 4770 can beat it out, fully clocked I'm not convinced.

4770 record-
1. 3DMark Vantage - Performance - 11442 marks 4770 @ 1000/1200mhz
4850 record-
3DMark Vantage - Performance - 11473 marks 4850 @ 980/1182mhz

Remember the 4770 is already known to yield a fair amount higher 3dmark score over the 4850 while giving pretty identical fps, except on high res which it falls behind. Considering the 4850 is still ahead in 3dmark tells me it's still a pretty superior card when it comes down to it.

We will see what happens with newer drivers to come. Don't take it wrong, I love the 4770, I'm even considering swapping out my 4850 for one unless the 56** 57** gets released soon at a better price and also offers good performance/power/heat/noise.

I have certainly seen 4770s clock higher than 1Ghz.
So I am pretty sure the 4770 is the superior card.
I never believe in 3Dmark especially Vantage, grab a 9600GT and turn on GPU Physx and you see it goes Sparta.

Nice clocking on yours, I guess I simply get the worst possible binned chip in the known universe on my 4850 IceQ4 turbo.
That shit loads at 80+C @factory OC.

Hm, that's pretty bad, have you adjusted your fan speeds?

If manually setting them doesn't take your temps down I would say you should check the heatsinks mounting, maybe new thermal paste is in order, but it shouldn't run that hot.

Sorry for the thread jack.

Well, that card artifacts @turboX speed thats 685/1100.
I even replace the paste with MX-2....
Thats why I will never buy an HD X850 anytime soon, and certianly won't buy any shit design by HIS.

Here is the rest of the story. (Which is true)

According to HWBOT.ORG those 2 scores are valid.

Now here is some very important information related to CPU scaling which helps boost these scores.

The HD4770 score was accomplished with a Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 3700mhz.

The HD4850 score was accomplished with a Core i7 Extreme 965 @ 4510mhz.

This is one of the reasons why the HD4770 is better.

Forget about going GTX 275 that card is now a waste of money, going from 4770 to GTX 275 is not even double performance.
Even a GTX 275 is not good for Crysis DX10 on high settings.
You want at lease a 5850/5770/GTX285.

Don´t throw your HD 4770 away just like that.. Do you have any idea of what performance that card has in crossfire?
From the what i've read it beats HD4890/GTX275 in most games. And that's without overclocking :).
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-4770-crossfire,2288.html

Even if you have to buy a new motherboard for that, it's still more profitable if you can find a cheap motherboard.

HD5870 is expensive right now but at least you will get to enjoy it's power and grow with it as yout and others learn how to tweak it.
