Few days ago i borrowed my friend an old Gigabyte 6850 1GB DDR5 OC (Windforce), only to have him say he gets no display on his SyncMaster T220 monitor... He tried to connect it via VGA -> DVI-I Adapter. I soon figured out that his monitor is DVI-D (not really sure if it is Single or Dual Link Monitor), so that converter won't work (it's meant only for converting analog signal through the DVI-I).
His rig is:
Gigabyte ga-z68mx-ud2h-b3,
i3-3240,
8GB of RAM,
500W FSP Group PSU...
(All 3 Pciex slots tested and working with HD 4870 from Palit, which only has DVI-I inputs, and works just fine with the T220 - DVI-D, as the 6850 should have worked as well). Both outputs on the GPU are DualLink
So i also borrowed him my DVI-D (Single link cable), same thing as with the converter, no display on either ports: DVI-I or DVI-D, since that DVI-D SL fits both of those, and should work. The DVI cable is working (tested on the Gigabyte r7 250x which has two DVI-D ports, in each, working perfectly).
I have tested the card with DVI-I ViewSonic monitor and it is working.
I've also upgraded the BIOS of the 6850 from F10 to F21 via ATIwinFlash tool, just to make at least that (somehow) out of the question.
Also tried connecting to my SAMSUNG TV via hdmi, that also doesn't work. Digital display part of GPU gone bad? How does DVI-I monitor even work connected to GPU's DVI-I via Single link DVI-D cable?
a) How can i get the GPU to work with the before-mentioned monitor?
b) It would be only logical to try to find a DVI-D (dual link cable)?
c) What other options do I have... ?
EDIT: I also noticed today, after reapplying thermal paste to the GPU, the part just right from the GPU's connectors is hotter than the GPU chip itself... hmmm
