Hi all,
Need some advise here. I have a P965 mobo with an oc Q6600 @ 3.33ghz and would like to upgrade from a GTX 260 to a HD 5870. My mobo is PCi-E 1.0. How much will the board hamper the HD 5870? I really do not want to change the board and cpu if I can help it. Thanks in advance for all good advice!

For gaming @ 1680x1050? Man all the games I play with my 260 @ 1920x1080 play pretty damn good with my setup which is similar to yours but with a newer chipset, which is just really a revised 965 and 2.0 pci-e slots.

I'd say wait till next month see what NV releases and wait for the prices to drop so you don't kick yourself in the ass for paying more to have what you don't necessarily need a month or two early imo. Maybe you do, but honestly if I'm gaming solid at a higher resolution with a little more OC, the same amount of memory, I can't see how you'd really need to upgrade yet unless you want 100FPS and DX11 right now.

:toast:

Edit: Why not try x64? Vista or 7? That would be a good upgrade imo!

I don't have MW2, but have been playing BC2 beta, with pretty good performance, not even seeing the low GPU load issues many are (whew!)...but maybe turn down AA? Update drivers? I'd still say at least try the x64 OS, Vista or 7, both are solid.

I'd also still say wait on the upgrade to an HD5xxx till after the NV stuff is released. I'm considering a 5850 since one can be OC'd to reach 5870 performance for a good chunk less...which even stock blows away a 260. And maybe the NV stuff will be worth taking a look at...though this time around at least for me...my budget's gonna be quite a bit lower for my next upgrade. Also on the PCI-e stuff, the ATI cards scale VERY well on lower bandwidth, little to no difference between 2.0 x16 and x8 pci-e performance, x8 @ 2.0 = x16 @ 1.0 bandwidth-wise, but not necessarily performance-wise yet. So I wouldn't worry too much there yet. When you decide to upgrade going to i5/p55/ddr3 would make more sense.

The PCI-E 1.1 will not hinder the HD5870 at all really.

The CPU shouldn't have a problem keeping up either.
