On the 22nd of December, 2011, AMD paper-launched its Radeon HD 7970. By all measures, it appears like when the card hits retail availability on the 9th of this month, AMD will have a winning product at hand, for the price-segment it's targeting with that. According to latest reports, a leaked confidential email of AMD sourced by Guru3D (now redacted) says that AMD wants to launch Radeon HD 7950 on the same day of its retail availability, which happens to be in the first week of February, 2012. So no Radeon HD 7950 on the 9th of January, as we were earlier told about. The Radeon HD 7950 will be an important SKU for AMD, as it's more affordable than the $550 HD 7970.

If the launch proper is pushed back to the first week of February 2012, that also means that the NDA breaks then as well, correct? Considering the paper launch of the 7970, it's a bit weird that they wouldn't launch the 7950 the same way. Would it mean perhaps that they're not confident enough in the product to lift the NDA to reviewers on the 9th?

Maybe the delay and lack of info are due to tweaks still in progress? My wild ass guess, it's being tweaked to come as close as possible to GTX 580 performance and will be priced at $449. A $400 price tag would be nice, but..

It could be possible that most of the chips don't need to be binned down to a 7950. The 7970 has so much headroom that they could have a hard time getting sufficient chips for the 7950.

Could be they don't want the 6950 all over again. Sell them cheaper then flash them to 6970 in this case 7950 to 7970....

No 7950 at "launch", colour me unsurprised...all seemed a bit predictable really.

Great way to make sure that 7970 gets the maximum exposure on the shop shelves, consumer wallet and tech sites.

man, that sapphire 7970 looks great with the black pcb, not a fan of the reference red pcb.

usd$385 for the 7950 is already unacceptable and now with this delay AMD is trying to shoot themselves in the foot.
Everyone is ticked off because they could not get decent GPU's for Xmas and waited for 10Jan now they have to wait even more. :banghead:

Come on Rory, get your game on or go home, maybe fire another 500 useless management morons at AMD then you and Ms China can fix this joke called AMD. :nutkick:

Rory if you can not release the 7950 then at least cut the prices on the 6950 so you can clear the stock and have users buy 2x 6950's for crossfire. :toast:

AMD seems to not hurry with these new cards. I don't blame them as the competition is nowhere to be seen right now.
I want to second this statement, first grab all of the top tier buyers, consider why steal sales from yourself? First see just how many will step-up at $550; this tells AMD if and just how many are willing to really ante-up even in a down economy. If you release both there are plenty who's consider a 7950 is just fine, and the marketing never really see’s if there where a group of folks who’d find the extra $100. Those who say I'll spend the extra today really delineates the size of the market going forward, those who can't substantiate it will hold. It's really a great tool to justify now moving to what’s their new "Super Über market", while it permits AMD to just keep the momentum rolling month after month.

It could be possible that most of the chips don't need to be binned down to a 7950. The 7970 has so much headroom that they could have a hard time getting sufficient chips for the 7950.
Man that would be crazy if TSMC was that good at wafer production right out of the gate that yields were that fantastic!
I really doubt that :shadedshu
Probably the opposite; that more chips are worse than AMD has contracted to accept and binning more below 7950 specifications. If that's the case we might well see a 7930 some point not too far out… when TSMC gives you lemons, you offer Lemonade!

I highly doubt these are planned delays. AMD wants to deal a blow to nvidia and waiting around doesn't do that. Just like the 7970 was delayed for a few weeks b/c of production issues, I'm sure this is the same. 7950s will sell much better, so they need to build stock. Leaking out a couple here and there would be bogus and just drive up retailer prices, then no one would buy them. You don't get high yields the 1st go around, especially not at TSMC LOL.

It already leaked elsewhere. Its gonna be $450 for reference models (unless information that was on leaked slides changes). I think the delay is because the 7950 is just the 7970 that doesn't pass all of the QA tests so they turn off some cores to make it pass. Once they have more of the 7970 chips, the 7950 should roll in nicely ;)
