A friend of mine bought a RAID controller not knowing what it was, for the sake of obtaining additional SATA ports.

I've never bothered with RAID controllers before so I don't know much about them. Would it be possible for him to use the controller to add drives to be treated normally, or at least use RAID 1 on single drives individually?
