RAID0 turned into two drive letters in windows 7.

Hi,

I originally have two 3 terabyte drives which I did raid 0 in Win 7 native mirror raid. Worked fine for years and see both drives as the Z drive.
Then I bought two 8 terabyte drives. I removed the two 3 terabyte drive and setup the two 8 terabyte drive as Raid 0. I now see two drives as R drive.

I put back in one of the 3 terabyte drive and imported it as a foreign drive. It complains about missing redundancy or something..
I shutdown then imported the other drive, and the redundancy message went away and said both 3 terabyte drives are good and healthy.

However, aside my R drive (two new 8Terabyte drives), I also see a D (3TeraByte) drive and a Z drive (3terabyte) with identical information in there, and windows says the raid is healthy. How do I get my two 3 terabyte drive to be referenced as one Z drive as it was before? now, when I copy data to one of the 3 Terabyte drives, it doesn't automatically copy to the other drive. How can I get my two 3terabyte drives back into one Z drive as I had it before?

I see the two terabyte drives now as Dynamic, online and healthy.. but how can it be when it's not copying stuff to each other automatically??

Thanks

perhaps remaking the raid array would help, you say RAID0 do you mean RAID1 because RAID0 is a stripped array over two or more drives and is not an array that has any form of redundancy in it ie: if you loose a drive from a raid0 array you loose everything where as raid1 has the redundancy of 2 drives where one is the mirror of the other

Yes, you are right, I have raid 1 (mirror). Athlonite, mind going back and see if you can re-answer the questions?

I could remake it, but can I have two sets of raid 1 in windows 7 so that it automatically recognize the old raid 1 when I put them back into the machine, and if they need to be in the same sata cable order?

You should be able to do as many RAID arrays as you like as long as you have the drives for them I've had 3 RAID0 volumes running at the same time on my PC Windows had no problem with it at all

If you are having problems and want to accomplish essentially the same thing, there is an option. Every 3 years or so I build another box to see if i can get any performance increase out of RAID 0.... Im 0 for 4 so far. This time, I did twin SSDs in RAID 0 and twin SSHDs in RAID 1.

As in the past, the revisiting RAID 0 was a fail... more often than not, performance was slower, Samsing utilities dont function on RAID arrays and Samsing does nut supoort RAID. As for the RAID 1 array, every once and a while the array would fail, not detecting the 2nd drive or "losing" the 2nd drive. Out of frustration, I broke the array and set the drives up individually. The main data drive is "mirrored" via backup oftware twice a day (lunch and 7 pm). This also makes it immune to failure and more convenient ... if desired i can even pull the drive and pop into any device.

So if you are having problems setting up those drives in RAID 1 gain, this might prove to be a temporary or not permanent solution.
