They have gone up, which is unfortunate because I want more.

It went up to 25% in Sweden, right? At least it was 25% when I ordered a keyboard at Qpad.

About a year ago DDR3 manufacturers thought there was going to be a huge boom in consumption. The Ipads, smart phones, and computers were being consumed at a great rate, and therefore memory was getting consumed. Microsoft and Intel both pushed for the production of vast amounts of RAM in order to support the Surface and Ultrabook product lines.

Then the bottom fell out of the market.

These companies compensated by slashing memory production, and sitting on their stock piles until they were sold out. It was announced a year ago that this was happening, and this website even had a news story on it.

Flash forward to today. Production is still nearly non-existant. The stock piles are all that is left, so the prices are going up. In a few months the cost per unit will be ideal, and the manufacturers will begin full-scale production again. The introduction of the new generation of consoles will offset the crappy launch of Windows 8, so production will spike and flood the market again. Flooded market drives price down, lower price will lead to the cycle repeating.

The kit(s) I bought this time last year has gone up nearly 50%. I suppose a JIT supply chain model would not be viable for such products; with such large volumes being consumed and seemingly unreliable demand.

Pure supply and demand would have produced a constant amount of RAM, and see the producers have a huge profit margin when the stock supply dropped. There was an artificial inflation of supply, due to a perceived demand.

After the swell in supply, it is supply and demand. The distinction, and it is a minor one, is that the system was never actually based on a real demand.


While the distinction is minor, the continuous cycling that the RAM industry goes through never matches a reasonable supply and demand relationship for long.

The manufacturers got together a ways back and scaled back on production just like they did hard drives to get a price increase

I wonder if how much of this has to do with the shadow of DDR4 looming around the corner. DDR4 will be available on the "server-level" (Haswell-E) before the "consumer-level" (Skylake). Normally, new memory architecture is introduced the other way around. Are memory manufacturers planning on easing DDR3 production in favor of shifting focus to DDR4?

It has been 25% for ages. There has been talks about adding some sort of "chemical tax" on clothes and electronics, but nothing else afaik.

DDR4 should be coming somewhat soonish. Maybe they're scaling back DDR3 production.

It's the high performance stuff that has increased the most dramatically recently, you can still get some decent prices for the 1333/1600mhz stuff if you shop around in the UK, I just built my daughter a basic desktop system just for Internet browsing and Microsoft office stuff and got a decent quality (Corsair XMS) 8GB for £40.

I would expect it to be in Sweden! Seems we complain about taxes, I mostly see your prices around 10-15% higher than even ours, although to be fair I have not checked recently.

It depends on what it is too. CPU's are more or less the same, GPU's (last time I checked anyway) is a wee bit cheaper here, generally. Avaraged it's pretty much the same. Not RAM though apparently, which is what I want right now.
