If i add an 667mhz 1GB ddr2 stick to a pair of 1gb 800mhz would it become slower or faster?
And can you still run dual channel?

The best performance is achieved by placing matching DIMMs ...same speed, same density, same manufacturer.

Your system may struggle with that setup. You never know if you try though...

in that case i assume your mobo will have changed the fsb:ram ratio to 2:1, 200 fsb : 400 ram (800mhz effective)

installing 667mhz ram will spoil this ratio and your mobo will have to run ram at the lowest clocked stick, so 667mhz. in this case i think your ratio will turn 1:1 so yes your comp will run slower than what its at now

ive not explained very well but i hope you get the jist of it!

Simple, they will both run at 667 MHz by default, will have a reduced/altered refresh rate and timings. Faster module + slower module = slower module's parameters followed. Unless of course you OC, which again could be limited.

You could try to OC it to 800mhz but you will still loose the dual channel. From my experience is not good to have a shitty RAM stick along with good ones. It bugs the system.

short answer is it runs only as fast as the slowest ram so adding 667 to your 800 makes it all run 667 speed. after that if you overclock your max will be the max point of that slower 667 speed because it limits you.
