I'm considering some new RAM for my 6700k Z170 system (at the moment just used for WCG Crunching but could be utilised for gaming rig or what have you :)) as currently there's a 4Gb 2400Mhz Corsair stick in there and I think it's just too small so I'm after a few suggestions really of what a sweet spot for some RAM would be..

I've noticed whilst Crunching with Linux Mint 19.3 I believe the version is (with the same rig, 8 threads) that the 8Gb of RAM I have in another system (Xeon E3 1245 V3, another 8 thread CPU) is also falling a little short with it allowing about 5 to 10% free at worst case times, so I'm thinking that 16Gb would be more than enough and if I swapped it over for a gaming rig or in Windows..

So 16Gb kit, 3200Mhz to 3466Mhz would be the sweet spot? B die of course I think is the only way forward :) I'm quite taken by some G Skill TridentX stuff.. But I was curious, what would anyone else go for? :)

I would go with any G.Skill above 3000Mhz and let the price be the factor. You can allways tighten up the timmings your self i bios.

I think you answered your own question. "So 16Gb kit, 3200Mhz"
CAS ?
New / Used / Budget:
See sort criteria:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007611 50008476 600561668 600006072&IsNodeId=1

I was just looking for some other opinions in case I miss out anything..

CAS timings not so fussed, as long as it's B die, non RGB (I'm not a fan of it personally) so something maybe around the 15 to 17 marker? Budgets I don't tend to adhere to simply because I'd rather pay out a little more to get what I 'want' (hate the word) than what I can afford as sometimes it's not always the best choice getting what you could afford over what you wish for. I'm willing to pay a little more first off if I'm honest :)

Also would this be considered the best value for money RAM around at the moment, this sort of spec? :)

Here in Denmark , the bang for the buck seems to be G.Skill Aegis 3000 Mhz for the moment. Prices change almost daily.

A set of Flares like I got for my build would be nice, over here they are about the cheapest set of B die you can get ATM with good timings: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232530

If they are cheap in the UK they would be a nice set to have, I'm currently running two sets in my setup making a total of 32GB's of RAM in this build and it's doing great.

I've been installing Team Dark Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Model TDPGD416G3200HC14ADC01 in all my workstations for the last year or so. They are Samsung B die with CAS 14, no RGB + clean minimalist esthetic as a bonus. Heavy heatsinks too.

Do not run stations overclocked, but for fun I've tested a few; some overclock to 3400 still at CAS 14, but most overclock less up to 3333 while still keeping CAS 14. Sub-timings can be tightened up quite a bit if you put in the time.

The oddity to me in this thread is the requirement for B-die without any care of the timings.

For an Intel rig, I wouldn't be so fussy about what IC is used. You are going to get charged a premium for abilities you seem not to need.

Also, in the OP you mention TridentX, which may have been a typo, but it is DDR3. I believe you mean to say TridentZ.

I mean by the no worrying about the timings simply because if it's B die, some tweaks and the timings mean very little and if adding some more volts to the field, it matters even less :)

I seem to have a lot of G Skill RAM here at the moment, apologies for the mix up.. :)

@eidairaman1 - I'm going to use that as a basis.. With Linux Mint 19.3 and Windows 10, 8Gb is really minimum even just using it as a cancer cruncher machine... 16Gb is a bit more safe just in case I ever use the rig for anything else..

@TheMadDutchDude .... Any particular Team Group sets mate you'd suggest??

Just keep in mind, not all B-die is amazing like you see around the interwebs. I have had many a B-die kit, and unless you pay huge (corsair/gskill) you have a 50% chance it will not do what you may expect it to.

As to the team memory, it is good, but it is in that brand that I got mixed results with their b-die kits.

No I can quite honestly believe and understand that is the case.. Which is why if I was serious about getting cherry picked RAMs I'd buy from someone who could give me a minimum speed they'd hit. My first TridentZ's I have (currently in my two AMD Ryzen rigs) were bought to go with my 5960X cherry picked CPU.. If you're wanting to buy something and get top spec, pay a little more so you know it'll do it to start with, why I bought the 5960X....

I think any kit of 3200 or 3466 B Die would be more than decent enough for what I'd need. If it doesn't clock very well, it wouldn't really bother me in these rigs :)

The ones I have can do 3333 with it's stock timings so it's not bad plus they don't have tall heatspreaders or RGB, just good RAM for whatever. The Team sticks suggested are good too, not knocking them at all but the Flares that I've seen are the cheapest for B die right now, could be others even cheapr but haven't noticed them yet.

I do agree, these sticks aren't stellar clockers but have a good set of stock timing specs going for them.

That's all I'm really after Bones to be honest :) Something basic but that actually works and works well more so :)

I'll see what I can find out, might even see if I can find some DDR3 stuff as well as my other Cruncher (2600k and Xeon E3) are only running on 8Gb and they seem to be hitting high RAM limits, so obviously something might have to change. Never had the issue with Linux Mint 18.3 tho? Oh well :D

Ocuk have team group ddr4 3000 cl16 16gb for £75, they're the same as the ones in my sig though not b dies, that said I'm running them at 3200 cl14 on 1st gen ryzen so not too bad at all.

If you are still looking for alternatives, this might provide some more input regarding other B-Die options:

https://www.hardwareluxx.de/communi...liste-alle-hersteller-25-04-19-a-1161530.html

IC quality on retail kits is not too bad in general, however some of the weaker kits might need loose timings / higher voltage to hit DDR4-4000/4133 (if your Z170 board is capable of that). I am personally very happy with my Trident Z @ DDR4-4133 CL16 1.4V for 24/7 and would always buy them again.

Any 16GB kit you can afford. Chances are you're never gonna be able to tell the real world differences apart anyways.

Just curious, why not 2 x 16Gb instead of running 2 sets of 16Gb? i.e. 4 modules rather than 2?

I got the black cl16 TridentX 3200mhz 16gb RGB kit and they can do cl14 for benches and easily run on CL15 but it really doesn't matter, for reals.
I love the look of the Trident Z's even with the RGB off they look awesome.

I'm a non RGB kinda of guy, subtle but functional for me :) Hopefully 16Gb will sort out a few of these rigs without any major hassles :)

I remember back when 8/16Mb was plenty....

I run 8gb on 3/4 PC's. I think 8gb is good...
16gb is fantastic...I think I seen the 3000mhz Trident Z's 32gb 16-18-18 kits for $169 recently.
I'm going to pointlessly upgrade to 32gb myself sometime this year.
I think we'll see 3200mhz 32gb kits going for $139 or better by July.
